I have a Dell dimension v400, Pentium II, 128Mb RAM, Win98. Recently I upgraded to XP. I want to install a D-Link 10/100 network card but XP doesn't recognize the hardware. I can use a dialup modem which works fine, but not the network card. I have done the usual restarting, 'add hardware' step, driver installation from CD, checking the card in the slot, etc. Doesn't work. I wonder if its a Dell proprietary thing. Any suggestions, Please Help.

I run lots of dell hardware of that era.. I don't think it's anything to do with any dell issues, but d-link things give lots of problems. Try finding the specific driver and putting it on the drive..then point xp's wizard at it specifically, then reboot and see if it happens.

Hello Janrocks, Many Thanks for replying.
I am sorry I did not understand when you said,'putting it on the drive..then point xp's wizard at it specifically'. Firstly, how(or what) to put it on the drive? Secondly, how to point XP's wizard there?

Please let me know what and how to do those things. Thanks again.
PS: Just so you know, the two lights next to the network card which signify 'modem on' and 'downloading' are green. But then when I try to find it in Control Panel - System - Hardware, the card is not present.

This is what janrocks meant:
When you are adding the hardware, select the option of 'manually specify a path' (or something like that). When you come to a browse button, browse to the specific driver that janrocks was referring to, and select the file that appears within it (if it was in a ZIP or RAR format, you'll have to unzip it first). After that, let XP install the driver...

Hi Ashwin
thanks for your help. Unfortunately it still doesn't work. It says the driver is installed but is something wrong, refers to code 10. I must get another network card(not D-Link) as janrocks may be right in saying its the D-Link card that may be the problem. Do you think thats right to do?
Thanks for your help again.

janrocks seems to know what he is talking about, but if you still want to try getting your existing one to work, you can copy-paste the entire error over here and post it(not just the code, I mean), so that I can help you figure out what's the problem..
