Progressive scan on a SDTV?

I know this might be a dumb question, but I bought a used Sony Flat screen KV27FS13 for my bedroom. The TV has component video inputs, so I thought it could play 480P. When I switch my DVD to Progressive, It scrambles the picture. If the TV will not play 480p, what is the purpose of the Component inputs? Are HDTV's the only TV's capable of playing 480P? Will I get a better picture using the component inputs even if it is only in 480i?

No. EDTVs are also capable of Progressive Scan playback.

Yes. There is less degradation of color and gray scale when compared to S-Video and Composite Video. The Component Video inputs allow you to connect a device using the best analog signal transfer technology available.

Progressive Scan is simply a different way to display the picture (complete frames all the time instead of half then half). This doesn't up the resolution because the same amount of information is show during the same period of time although some say that Progressive Scan is better at handling fast motion. But Tube tvs "Paint" pictures so fast that a difference can't be seen at optimal viewing angels anyway. The one part of the picture Progressive Scanning improves for sure is sharpness through the elimination of flicker.

Your TV is not a Fixed Pixel Display (LCD, DLP, LCoS, or Plasma) nor is it a Progressive Scan CRT (i.e. a CRT Computer Monitor). Your TV is an SDTV Tube (CRT) and can't display a Progressive Scan image.
