Hi
I have been converting tapes to DVD-Rs for family members for a couple of years now. All the sudden they are starting to tell me that the DVDs stopped playing! They played fine in the past - but not anymore. Or maybe it will play fine for 5 minutes.
This is freaking me out! I put alot of time into this!
I can't be the only one to hear this. SO I thought this thread would be helpful to anyone copying DVDs for people.
Here is some info...
I have put labels on these DVDs
I originally converted each video to DVD-RW (on my Sharp Standalone DVD Recorder) then copied them to DVD-R or DVD+R on the computer (WINXP). (this seems to have less errors copying this way). Should I abandon the DVD-RW approach?
Could I be copying them at too high of a speed (8x)?
What the hell is going on?
While we are at it - I want a new Standalone DVD Recorder. Which Brand Recorders do well with other brand players?
Any reply would make a great Christmas present. Even after the holiday!

U guys rock!

what is the brand of the dvd's? cheep or low quailty dvd will do this, try to use good quailty media like verb's fuji, ty's, you will spend a little more but you won't have the problems, also try burning at 4x, hope this helps

your first statement on what you are doing could be the culprit:
Quote:
I have put labels on these DVDs

adding paper labels to DVDs are known to throw the DVD off track and then have read errors in players! If you really want to put labels on DVDs.... buy the PRINTABLE DVDs that you can use a printer and print labels right on top of the DVD itself! you can design your own labels and use a printer like the Epson R200-300 series or higher.

if you got away with it in the past using paper labels then consider yourself lucky because this is a known fact to cause problems in playback.

Older CMC and Princo discs were notorious for this, usually in less than a year's time.
