Tools you'll need
1) Alcohol 120%
http://www.alcohol-software.com/ 2) Alcoholer 4.x
http://www.aray-software.com/ 3) BlindWrite 5 BWA Builder
http://www.vso-software.fr/download.htm Note: For Blindwrite registered users only
4) BWA& MDS file downloads : http://www.copybase.ch/ http://cd-rw.org/software/cdr_software/cdr_applications/blindwrite_suite.cfm 5)A-Ray Scanner (cd scanner that determines what cd protection is on the cd\image)
http://www.aray-software.com/
After downloading BlindWrite Suite, go to the directory to where you installed BlindWrite and copy& paste the BWA Builder to your desktop then uninstall BlindWrite Suite (trust me on this one)
===============================================
1. Start by making an image of the play cd of the game you want to copy. The datatype setting to use is securom new (not securom new 4.x) for this purpose and the image must be saved in CloneCD format and not in alcohol?s native format. Reading speed doesn?t matter. Max speed will be fine. [Note: If the game has more than one cd, the only one that will be protected will be the one that has to be in the drive to play the game. The other cd/s can be copied by just using your favorite general burning software (Nero, burnatonce) without any special settings.
2. Then either download a bwa file for the cd you want to copy or use blindwrite's bwa builder to make your own. If you're able to download a bwa file, then you can proceed straight to patching with Alcoholer 4x\TwinCreator. If not, well you'll just have to make one.
3. Next make a bwa file (skip this step if you've downloaded one). To make a bwa file, you need to use blindwrite's bwa builder. There is no need for blindwrite itself to be on your system. You can install blindwrite, copy the bwa builder exe file to another folder (Desktop preferably)or on your hard drive and then uninstall blindwrite if you don't want it on your system. The patin-couffin layer necessary for the bwa builder to function won't be removed when blindwrite is uninstalled.] There are two ways to use the bwa builder to make a good bwa file
a) Once you've put the play cd into your chosen reader, start the bwa builder. Select the reader, if you've got more than one, and speed. Low speeds (1x to 4x) usually work best but not always so experiment and see what works best for you and then click start. You'll then be asked if you want the program to set the last sector automatically. Either say yes if you want the bwa builder to analyze the whole cd or say No and set it yourself. If you say no, then you'll need to have previously set the max sector yourself - blackcheck has indicated that 50,000 is usually enough. The analysis will then start.
When it's finished, ,the graph will show a fairly smooth curve with only one or two spikes and preferably none. Don't worry if you can't get the perfect spikeless curves as not everyone is going to be able to achieve his flawless results. If there are only one or two spikes the copy will still work ok, particularly if the spikes aren't in the first 50,000 sectors (the copy will probably be a little slower to verify than one made with a spikeless bwa file but it will still work). [Tip: Don't terminate the analysis just because a number of spikes appear on the graph while the analysis is proceeding. Wait until it's finished because most all of them will be eliminated by the bwa builder as it completes the process. If there's a lot of spikes in the graph, don't bother with it. It won't work. Try again and if you again get a bad graph try at a different speed or with a different reader. Once you get one that looks ok, click on file and then save BWA to save the file.
b) If you can't get a good .bwa file just using the bwa builder, then you'll have to try to make one by converting an .mds file created by alcohol. To make an mds file with alcohol simply make an image of the play cd using securom new 4.x settings in mds/mdf format. When you're asked to select the measuring speed for the DPM function, again you'll probably get better results at low speed(1-4x). When it's finished making the image files, run the bwa builder and load the mds file by clicking on file and then load BWA/MDS. If the graph looks ok then create a .bwa file by clicking on File and then Convert MDS -> BWA. This will create a .bwa file in the same folder as your .mds file. You can then delete the mds/mdf files as they're no longer needed.
4. Now it's time to patch the image files.Open Alcoholer 4.x and locate the Alcohol 120% tab folder and run TwinCreator and leave the default of 15 as it works fine for me. However, 6 and 50 are also known to work. Select the .ccd file and the .bwa file and then click start TwinCreator.Click select support image and locate the .ccd file now click select media-description and locate the bwa file and then click start. When it's finished, you'll have three new files in the same folder where you saved the original image files. Those files will be patched.ccd, patched.img and patched.sub.
5. You've patched the image files and you're now ready to burn your back-up copy. Just start alcohol?s image burning wizard and burn patched.ccd using the securom new (not securom new 4.x) datatype setting. Because this type of copy is anything but standard,, you'll probably get better results if you burn at relatively low speed (say 8x). Before burning you'll be warned that the image size doesn't match the lead-out specified in the toc and you'll be given three burning options. The first option is correct: "Keep TOC as on source cd, write until end of image file".

Once again great work Shoey! Perhaps we should start publishing these on the actual site(s)? If you could provide a few screenshots, then I could edit this into an article. PM me about this, ok?

Step 4 refers to patching the .ccd (CloneCD) image after you've read the "original" image of the SecuROM 4.8.x protection saving the file format as CloneCD (.ccd) using Alcohol 120%. If you don't have a mdf. or bwa file then you use the SecuROM *NEW* (4x) datatype profile and for DPM settings, use High and read at 1x. If you have a .mdf or bwa file then you would run the burning image wizard and use the SecuROM *NEW* datatype profile (after patching the image with Alcoholer 4.x+ TwinCreator. As far as an internet download of an SecuROM 4.8.x image, no guarentee this method will work.

shooey,
your tutorial works wonderfully, it helped a lot but i have a couple of additions to it for some of us newbies. first of all in order for your directions to work for creating your own BWA you must be using version 4.x. the layout of 5.x is very different and doesn't support the same directions as the interface has been reworked. your best bet would be to find an existing BWA. http://www.portmac.com/BWA_downloads.htm
has a good list of BWA files which worked well for me. otherwise very thorough, thanks.

I would encourage anyone using BlindWrite 5 Beta to use this program in and of itself to backup SecuROM 4.8.3&up.

First off I like to say im new to the site, I been searching this site for the last couple of days.
Shoey, you are the MAN!!! Great advice with everything you give. Now onto my questions (hopefully shoey can help me, contact me if you dont mind would like to hear from you, with your great advice.)
I have tried backing up my Max payne 2 *SecurRom 4.85-i belive). I had success backing up the game. However I can only install the back up on my cdrw drive (liteon 52x36x52)
How can I be able to make a image file backup of the game and make it able to install on other cdrom/dvd rom devices beside only my cdrw that I backed it up with?
Also I have tried other ways. I first tried using clone cd and tweak with cd 2 (play cd) and alcohol as well with tweak on cd 2.
Hope I am correct when I say you have to only tweak the cd that allows you to play the game and not the cd 1 thats installation only? Just making sure. Any help would be gladly needed.
My brother has taken my original from me and all I have is my image on my hard drive and I despertly want to get my game on my notebook as well as my Pc (as I have now)
I been pulling my hair out and been through sooo many cdr's, after a while it gets frustrating but I dont want to give up though :-)

Using BlindWrite 5 Beta, make a true image of Max Payne 2 (cd 2) using no topology measurement= (bwa file) and label the backup "install disc". Now make another backup of Max Payne 2(cd 2) with topology measurement (bwa file) and label "play disc".
If Max Payne 2 (cd 1) is SecuROM cd protected, then backup with no topology measurement. If Max Payne 2 (cd 1) has no cd protection then just burn as you would a data disc. I encourage that you burn slow m8.

It's a "hit or miss" m8.
You would have a much better success ratio backing up SecuROM 4.8.3& up using a Plextor Premium (52\32\52x) as this drive writes VariRec for SecuROM as most all other cd burners write TwinPeak. The VariRec write method eliminates the need of creating a "play disc" as this backup will install\play SecuROM 4.8.3& up flawlessly on "most" drives.

Thanks for the advice Shoey, I will try it. With the Blindwrite 5, when it extracts from the cds, it also says extracting topology after it reads the cd is that ok? Or should I skip that part?

I got an error when I tried to burn it would say "list index out of bounds" I tried another way, where I tweaked cd 1 and kept cd 2 untweaked. I tried installing it on another device and it goes all the way to the end of the installation and I get "filename, directory name or volume syntax incorrect" it also points to area that i was installing the game in. Saying their is a problem with the e2driver, Then it goes "you have inserted the play disc insert the install disc" It asks me for cd 2 and I know cd 2 is the play disc but it asked me for it. Im so frustrated. I probably just going to give up. Thanks for the help Shoey. I appreciated it.
Message me on hotmail: mrcleo21@hotmail.com Im new to this all, need all the help I can get. Thanks

Backing up Max Payne (cd 1&2) using BlindWrite 5 Beta:
1) Open Blindwrite 5 Tweaker and under basic settings tab folder choose automatice for handle read error, subcode for data and subcodes for audio. In the Topology tab folder choose do not write topology measurement and enable never extract. Now click run BlindWrite. Repeat this process for cd 2.
2) Open BlindWrite 5 Beta and burn cd 1&2 DAO pw at 8x and label install disc 1&2.
3)Insert cd 2 in Litey cd burner. Open Blindwrite 5 Tweaker and under basic settings tab folder choose automatice for handle read error, subcode for data and subcodes for audio.
Go to the topology tab folder and choose automatice for writing topology and automatic for read topology.
4) Simply Open BlindWrite 5 Beta and burn cd 2 DAO pw at 8x and label "play disc". Now you have 3 backups. CD 1&2 labeled "install disc", cd 2 labeled "play disc".

Shoey, I read your guide and I'm having a problem backing up Max Payne 2. My computer says something about time exceeding in trying to verify original disc. So I have some questions:
1) Do I have to use both by backups as the install discs in order to work with the backup play disc?
2) I tried to find the BWA builder in Blindwrite but when I downloaded 5.0.2 there was no separate EXE program for it?
Also, the download for the old verison 4 doesn't work..I download it and the setup says error in program. Any other place to download?
3) In Alcohol 120, there is an extra emulation box for securom besides the regular emulation box, should this one also be checked?
Thank you!

I also have a question. I don't have a ccd-file but a bin-file. Is there a way i can convert my bin into a ccd because i can't use alcoholer with a ccd. or is it posible to extract the bin with the isobuster and then emulate it with alcohol 120% as a cd and make a clone-cd imige of it?

Shoey, on one of the steps you said that if you can't create a good-looking graph for a bwa file, you can convert one from an mds. For some reason, when the DPM measurement begins, Alcohol tells me it can't get the DPM information with the current device. Is this because of the cd-rom drive I'm using?

I thought blindwrite 5 was just for the plextor premium?
The image file I got is an .MDS Alcohol 120% file and I dont have the cd cuz I'm letting my friend borrow it but can I mount on the device and make .ccd from that. Oh yeah and to use BWA Builder 5, you need the registered version of BW 5.

This isn't true as when one writes using BlindWrite 5 with a Plex Premium, one can see in the BW5 log it shows the Plex Premium writing "VariRec". If burning with any other burner, one can see in the BW5 log that it writes "TwinPeak".

Not true m8 as you can go to the VSO (BlindWrite) website and download BWA Builder seperatly.
