There is no UJ 822da... I had a look and couldn't find it. Are you sure on model number?

This is the name on the Device Management name so I assume it is the right name. I tried number of drivers with similar names from Sony website but none of them worked. I am quite happy to use any generic driver which will allow me to reinstall my DVD/RW on my Sony Viao VGN-T27GP without the need to run the Viao recovery CD and to lose all my C drive programs and setup (my Viao recovery utility is not working ? I have no clue why).

Oh, so are you looking to update the firmware, or reinstall your drive?
If you want to reinstall your drive, go to hardware manager, then find your drive and uninstall it. Now reboot and windows will auto install it again for you.
What exactly is the problem you are having, you haven't said yet! :)

I need to reinstall my DVD/RW drive. I tried all the obvious things (I am fairly experience) I uninstalled my devices and reboot number of times, I looked for new hardware, tried to use the Viao recovery CD remotely, I tried to look for driver on the internet nothing worked.
I cannot see or access my DVD drive after uninstalling it accidentally while I was trying to sort out another problem (my USB U3 lunch pad didn?t work and I was advised by the U3 guys to do exactly what you advised me ? thereafter I lost my DVD and cannot get it back). I assume that the U3 which act as a CDROM drive is conflicting with my DVD drive but the eU3 support system cannot help me. I, I allocated new drive letters to my U3 USB port but this didn?t work as well.
I do not care about the U3 anymore but I must have my DVD working again since I need it for my work . When inserting the Viao recovery CD it advise me that if I will run it I will lose my entire C drive content. This will throw me back big time and I would like to avoid doing if possible.

Did you try uninstalling the IDE controllers? Or checking they're all OK?

Yes I did. The process of reinstallation is going fine until almost the end and then I get an error message that there is a problem in the registry. I tried to use a registry fixing software (registrysmart) didn?t help. Think I will have to reinstall Viao OS cannot fins a way around it.

Try this quick fix...
Quote: If the drives are still listed in the Device Manager, delete them then carefully follow this fix:
"Upper/Lower Filters:
a. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
b. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
c. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
d. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
e. Expand the "Control" Key
f. Expand the "Class" Key
g. Look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
h. Highlight this key by left clicking once on it
i. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
j. Exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen
Reboot your computer"
Might do it for ya. DOn't reainstall just yet!

Sweet! Glad you got it sorted!
As for what went wrong, it's quite hard to explain, but it's basically something to do with conflicting values in your registry. This is common with Sonys it seems :)
Anyway, it's sorted, so great :-D
