Hi guys & Merry Christmas. I have a pretty simple question, if anyone knows the answer it'd be much appreciated.

I have 2 PCs. 1 has Nero Burning Rom v.6 installed on it and the other has Sonic Digitalmedia v.7. I'd like to use a single DVD+RW to go between the 2 PCs (to move files etc.), which would mean rewriting the single DVD+RW with both Nero and Sonic.
I don't sem to be able to do this. Are they incompatible for rewriting DVD RWs? Should Nero's UDF format or Sonic's DLA format be universal and allow me to rewrite the DVD in both progs?

Athlon2800+, 512DDR, Plextor504A+R/RW, Win XP.

The think the problem here is that Sonic's DLA (drive letter access) is a drag and drop packet writer. That's a bit different than a traditional burn under UDF I think. In Nero the equivalent packet writer is InCD. I have no idea whether InCD and DLA can read each other's writing.

I'd guess your Sonic software is old. Is that the problem? Otherwise just do traditional burns to the RW media on each system.

I actually tried to do regular burns, but Nero just gave me error messages. Sonic will still let me add files to the DVD+RW though, so I know I didn't accidently finalise it.

Should Nero be capable of writing to a DVD+RW which has been used by another program (Sonic)?

Packeting writing software treats the disk as any other randomly accessible disk like a HDD, floppy disk, etc. The disk's table of contents is updated as changes occur. Traditional UDF writing (ignoring nonfinalized multisession writing) is one-time and the permanent table of contents is written based on the burn. I do not think there is a common way of implementing packeting writing that's used by all software, but I don't keep up on this. Mount Rainier is the hardware standard available for random access reading and writing/packet writing on DVD RW media, but is not implemented by most manufacturers.

I haven't had any problems in the past using different software to burn RW disks. I just don't think you can mix proprietary packeting writing with traditional burning. Why not just use the same software on both systems? If you're transferring data back and forth, the quickest way is by using a portable HDD.

Have you tried using the same software on both computers?

just to let you know....... I use Roxio and Nero, which are on the same computer and co existing without conflicts..... why I am telling you this because sometimes the packet writing that Roxio has interferes with Nero burning DVDs (on some computers!). But the reason why I need it is to backup my Quicken files. I need a packet writing program to use with my RW media....... Sonic DLA or HP DLA or Roxio Drag and Drop are such programs. When using packet writing programs you have to format the RW disk so it can be used like a hard drive and you can transfer files that fit onto that media! When I didn't have Roxio or any DLA program on my computer my RW disks would not backup in Quicken! I'm happy that I have the best of both worlds now with no conflicts from either programs.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

The reason I don't have both progs on my PCs is that I only own the license for 1 PC per program.

I honestly don't know why Nero won't write to a DVD+RW which Sonic has written to. I can still add to it with Sonic so I know it hasn't been finalised.
I've only tried regular burning to the DVD, not UDF/DLA. I'll try those 2 formats too, in a few days though, meantime I've got some serious mince pie eating to do!! I'll post back with the results.

Have a great Xmas.
