Hi asajj
Verbatim is a pretty sure bet instore - it's usually made by MCC here in the States. You'll see advanced azo advertised on it. Best Buy has a sale these week - 50 for 12.99.

For the others you need to look for made in Japan on the Sony, Fuji (usually made by Taiyo Yuden - great) & Maxell. Getting harder and harder to find in store at least where I am.

I take out the guess work and buy genuine Taiyo Yuden online from stores like supermediastore & rima.
They both have good prices esp. this time of year.

I get majority of my media locally through the brick&mortar stores like staples/office max/and bestbuy.

Verbatim are very good, and bestbuy and office max runs a sale or 2 a month for under $15 per 50 pk. Walmart's a great price matching store when they have the sony tys and staple's are out of the sony tys.

Just like binkie7 posted, look for country of origin on the wrappers. The japanese maxells will yield the hitachi's. Fuji also have some MIJ media.

Not so fortunant with sony media. Some of their Made in Japan spindles will code as sony media- +1x-16x speed. I was getting the sony spindles that had a white/octagon foam spacer holding the discs down. You could simply look at the top of the spindle and find the sony tys. The rest of the spindles will have round white and round gray spacers. Not taiyo yuden sony's,but pretty decent media.

Sony now is putting a blue paper label in the top of the spindles-covering up the foam spacer. This will make it a lot tougher figuring out the Made in Japan sony tys and the reg sonys.

I know office depot has a return policy on media-in my locale. They'll take back opened packs. Wal-mart should as well.

Then you got the taiyo yuden off the internet sites, and a lot of peeps have gotten fake tys at some of them.
