Hello,

I was recently asked to recover some corrupted data from a set of 7 identical DVD-R discs. I've spent the last two days trying to track down the problem. The discs are Verbatim Datalife DVD-R?s (4.7 GB capacity).

I've searched this forum as well as other resources trying to find a solution, but I haven't been able to track down what I need.

Only some files are corrupted, but the files that are corrupted have a 100 percent failure rate on all 7 discs.

The drive used to create the discs was an NEC ND-1100A (NOT the DELL version). I realize this drive is a DVD+R/RW model and it isn?t capable of writing DVD-R?s.

As far as I know this is the only DVD burner available to the person who created the discs. I tried creating a new disc using the same media and burner, but the software reported the media as being invalid.

I have two theories at this point:
A: The affected files were corrupted prior to burning.
B: The affected files are located beyond a size limit (such as 4GB).

I've tried several data recovery tools, but they've all failed. Here's a run-down:
- Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier Version 1.41 (hanged).
- CD/DVD Diagnostic (trial version hanged).
- Bad Copy 3 (trial version failed).
- isoBuster (failed, hardware reported error code 03/11/00 ? which is an unrecovered read error).

I thought about posting this message to the DVD-R media forum, but decided against it due to the warning ("No software or backup questions allowed!").

Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time,

Do Many Things ... Well

So, let me see if I understand you..... you used -R media on a drive that you know only supports +R media, and now you are wondering why it doesn't work?

I had a similar problem; I put diesel in my car instead of gasoline, and now it won't start. Any ideas what might be wrong?

All the bruning info you need to start is here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php#dvd9dvd2one

No.

I didn't do it. I said I was asked to solve a problem. And I'm not sure that is the problem either.

Thanks for being a wise-ass. :)

If you don't want help then please leave these boards. I was trying to simplify the problem by giving a comparison for you.

Bottom line is, if you (or your friend, or his cousin, or anybody else) tries to write to DVD-R media on a drive that doesn't support DVD-R media, it will not work.

Next time don't be so shocked when asking a stupid question that you get a stupid answer.

As I pointed out in my original post, I tried to burn the same media (DVD-R) in the drive and the software refused to create the disc.

The fact is that I have 7 working DVD-R's with partially corrupted data. I'm just trying to track down what might be wrong.

I think you've clearly proven that the discs were not burned in a DVD+R drive. Thank you for your help.

Does DVD the software you use read the discs ok. Can you explore the disc by right clicking on the drive. If you can get the data off the disc it will burn ok. If the data does not come off the disc, then you be screwed.

Ken, i think your problem might have somethig to do with the tires on your car. Not sure lol heeheehehe
