I am a total newbie to this so forgive me if I don't use the right lingo.
Anyway,
I have had my computer for about 8 months and all of a sudden my cd dvd rom drive just won't work. It doesn't show up on the computer with the other drives anymore. When I put in a disk it doesn't play, and if i search for it. it's like it doesn't exist.
I looked at my device manager and found it there . this is the information it had;
-Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.-
I tried to run the trouble shooter but it wouldn't work either.
I clicked on the driver tab and it had this info-
HD-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B
it didn't give a manufacturer.
So I'm getting that something is wrong with the driver but I don't know what to do about it.
sounds like your firmware is corrupted or damaged in some way. check out this link here and download the new driver. Uninstall your current damanged firmware and reflash the drive with the updated drivers.

yeah i have a sister model of yours in my rig (4163B) i updated the firmware and kept a copy just in case i want a fresh install in the future. its worth the 2-5 min install and reboot mine works like a dream the only problem now is that im at around 650 burns so the laser isnt focusing right; but 40 bucks CDN for that many burns over a 3 year period certainly screams quality and durability to me.
well, I tried uninstalling the firmware and updating the drivers but it didn't work. It might be something else because I also tried to use my old HP external cd burner. I installed it and it wouldn't work either. It gave the same info in the device manager as the internal one.
Is there anything else that might be preventing the driver from not being recognized?
I would try to make it the first Optical drive in the BIOS but i have no idea how to do that. Is it something someone can explain to me?
I have no money to get this fixed by anyone. They want $100.00 just to look at it!
I'm totally lost because I can't even use it to install software or anything.
Any help appreciated.
Hello,
I have not had use of my computer internet for a while..long story won't go into it,
But now i am back and still am trying to fix this same problem.
I know it has been a while but hoping you could help.
I'm not sure of all the info you need but this is what I get from the system properties;
(If it's not enough, just let me know how to get
what you need).
microsoft windows xp media center edition
version 2002
service pack 2
Also this is is the error message that's in the DVDR's properties box. I looked it up at Microsoft.
Code 39
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
the recommended resolution is to: Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.
which I've done..no dice.
And then it suggests using the troubleshooter which is also not working.>:(
This is the reasons it gives for the drive not working:
Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.
I know the driver is present , so that's out. But i don't' know what the rest means or how to check or fix them.
Also I've tried to connect two other DVDR's to the computer and neither of them worked either. And both gave that same error code-39. so I know it's not the DVDR that's the problem or the driver.
Hello again..Okay, no need to answer this one.
I fixed it!!YAY!!! And it was so simple.
I went back to Microsoft and looked up code 39 again.
This time a thread came up, with lots of people having the same problem as I am.
Someone there had the answer. It's located a this page in case any reading this is also having this problem:
