From what I can see I can create a torrent with azareus and host it myself. I'd have to use my IP address to do this.

what am I opening myself up to if I use my IP address?

Nothing, actually.
As long as you don't give people the torrent for whatever your hosting, nothing will happen.
And since you will probably only share such a torrent with friends, you should be safe.
