Can someone please help me out with a firmware update? I have a Samsung TS-H552B Dvd writer and I don't know which version firmware to download. I went on the Samsung Download page and there's like 10 different versions of firmware updates so I'm really unsure.

Did your drive come in the PC?
What make is your PC? (Is it a Gateway?)

Ok.
This is the firmware.

You need this to flash your drive with that firmware.

Darn it, now I ran into another problem. I saved the file to my computer now I can't open it. It said something about attempting to open a bin file. Am I doing something wrong here?

Ok, the second download link I gave you... download and run it. Now open your .bin file with that. :-)

Sorry it's me again. I tried running the bin file with the flash software but all it said was "Terminated Test Day". Run, New SFDNWIN version. So do I have to download something else?

Go to Samsung's site and look for a new version there.

I went on the Samsung site and downloaded an older version and it actually worked. I downloaded an older flash player for version T10 and it was able to open the T12 BIN file. So I would imagine I would do the same for the CD ROM Drive?

Nice one! Well, not really. It depends on the make of your CD drive...

What is it? I'll find the firmware for you - however, it's not really important to keep CD ROM firmware up-to-date.

Oh ok, the reason why I asked you about the CD ROM drive is because it's not reading any CDs right now. It just stopped reading one day and when I check on the properties it says that it's working properly. So I just thought that it could be a firmware issue. Anyway, my CD ROM is a Samsung SC-148A. Do you think firmware could be the issue or maybe my AnyDVD software?

Neither. I think it's your laser. It's probably dies, being an older drive. Also, lasers are more picky when it comes to cds than dvds.

I'd say chuck it and get a new dvd rw. :)

Ok, cause that was my next option. Either to get a new DVD ROM or another DVD Writer. Do you have any suggestions on some good writers? I want a writer that will burn stuff that plays on all DVD players. Some stuff I burn right now will play fine on certain DVD players and skip on others. Also some DVD players will only play DVDs burned at certain speeds. For example my portable DVD player only plays DVDs burned at 4x for some odd reason although it's not all the time. Maybe it was because I wasn't using the updated firmware.

As for new burners... read around this forum (DVD-R Drives), as there is lots of info in ther from myself and others.

You want a DVD ReWriter though, not ROM.

As for skipping dvds, that could be cos of bad media, wrong burn speeds, not up-to-date firmware...

Ok thanks. I never knew that certain DVD players play DVDs better at certain speeds. I usually find that the really cheap DVD players are not as picky as the more expensive ones. They will play DVDs burned at any speed without skipping. Also the media I use right now is TDK. The kind you get from Costco. I'm thinking about trying out the Taiyou Udens next.

If you want my advice... Ditch the TDK and get some Taiyo Yuden <- Correct Spelling :-)

Lol~

I've read in the forums that the TYs get imitated a lot. So how am I supposed to know if it's a knockoff or the real Taiyo Yudens? Someone in the forum also said that Sony and Verbatim is better than the TYs. I tried the Verbatim printable 16x discs before and that was a disaster. It skipped like crazy.

Sony and Verbatim aren't better than TY, but they are sometimes made by Sony or Verbatim, which some people feel are better when made by them.

Also, to get genuine TY, make sure you get them from a reputable store (they're only available online unless you wanna go to Japan...LOL) so buy from places like rima or supermediastore.
