Possible to edit DVDs using Nero Smart Start?

Hi! I'm hoping someone here can help me, I can't find much about this on the Nero site. We installed a DVD burner several months ago and I have successfully copied a few DVDs. Now I'm trying to copy more DVDs but I have some that I would like to edit commercials out of. Is this even possible with Nero Smart Start? I'm really new to this, this is just the program that came with the burner.
Also, is there a way to save the content on a DVD to my hardrive? So it can be viewed without inserting an actual DVD?

Hello.

You'll need Nero's NeroVision or another authoring program to edit out commercials. Burners come either with Nero-lite or the full version. NeroVision is in the full suite. I use TMPGEnc Author for editing commercials from DVDs. Version 1.6 has a fully functioning free trial. Nero also has a fully function free trial if you have the lite version that doesn't include NeroVision.

You can "rip" the contents of a DVD to your HDD with DVD Decrypter if it doesn't have strong copy protection. Many software players will play DVD file folders stored on a HDD. If you rip an ISO image of the DVD, you'll need to mount the image as a virtual DVD with Daemon Tools, Alcohol120% or some other virtual DVD software. The mounted image will then appear as a normal DVD to all software and be playable as such. To rip a DVD with strong copy protection, you'll need to use a background program like AnyDVD or use a more potent ripper like DVDFab Decrypter or Ripit4me.

Thanks for the advice! My version includes NeroVision Express 3. I tried using the 'make an editable DVD' feature but it said that my "disc has been finalized and could not be used for future projects". I knew it was finalized, but I didn't think that would effect the importation of the content. Guess I was wrong. But I think I will go ahead and visit the links you suggested and download the full version and the Decrypter. Thanks again!

I think you would have been OK had you just ripped the DVD files to your HDD and started from there. Sometimes finalized +R and -R disks from some standalone recorders are problematic with DVD software. I use +RW media for recording on the standalone for that reason. TMPGEnc Author is pretty good at reading disks recorded on standalones which is why I prefer it. If software won't recognize and rip your recorded disks, try using ISOBuster to open them and copy the DVD files to your HDD.
