recieved a 50pk of maxell 16x DVD-R from my sis ' for xmas - have'nt opened them yet ! will they code out as something usefull or will they be CMC crappers ? supposedly she bought @ target & I will be able to swap'em out ! should they stay or should they go now ?? Thanks y'all happy new year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy New Year to you too.
Is it MIJ? If not, then I highly doubt it's going to be Hitachi Maxell (MIJ by Hitachi Corp.), it might be Ritek. I've been using Hitachi Maxells for over 2 years and the only genuine Hitachi products are "Made In Japan."
By the way, since I'm sucha "Hitachi Maxell-holic" beside YUDENs, I'll spice up this thread with a recent backup of mine "THE DESCENT."

Maxell has some good manufacturers for their +4x and +8x,but not so good with the +16x:

Their dash format has a higher chance of cmags,so maybe your -16x will also be cmags?
So far,half of those cmag maxells burned ok.No coasters. I give them to my lil bro and he's not complaining. I burned them at 4x.
Bigtoxy69? What's that tub look like-on the clear plastic part. Is it more of a cone shape,or is it perfectly straight-like a verbatim tub.
Mine has a cone shape to it,unlike all the maxell media that I previous purchased. All the cone shaped spindles say Made in Taiwan on the plus format.

Saugmon - Lil' soggy Buddy ! I suppose one could call it cone shaped the Cakebox top ( Clear Part is not a Straight up cylinder ! More of a two tier affair a Banded larger diameter area where it meets the cakebox base and then a smaller diamter the rest of the way to the top ! They are deffintely DVD-R Made in Taiwan 16X Maxells ( That's what the label says anyway ) and as far as I can tell the disc labels ( top surface) are that orange/coppery /gold? color sorta like the 8x maxells /riteks ! that's what the top disc looks like through the plastic anyways ! I hate to open them if they're gonna be cmc ! My sis' works @ Target & she gave'em to me for Xmas - she said if they are'nt the right ones take'em in and swap themn out ! I'm kinda tempted to swap them out for a tub of sony's if they have them? A 50 pk. for a 50 pk ! I know that they sell Imation atleast on their website ! but that would be swapping carp for crap so not worth doing ! IF I could find some Sony Octagons /Taiyo yudens toswap out for that would be sweet ! But given if the maxells are gonna be CMC - I would take MIt sony's and be happy ! Organized my media Menagerie & found a 100ct. spindle of verbatims that did'nt know I had & a 100ct spindle of Mit sony DVD+R's that I don't remember buying ? did'nt steal them or anything just don't remember buying them ! weird huh? antways thanx for the help & happy New years to you & family Lil' Green Daddy Ciao!

If the clear top of that tub is not symetrical-even from the bass to the top,then I'd bet they are cmags.
Swap them for some sony or the verbs if possible. There's still some media out there a lot worse than cmags: AML,MBI,UME,Prodisc.
Sony media is the most consistant brand name,not including Ty or verbatim. Their 8x and 16x media is very good from either japan or taiwan. Not so fortunant was their older 4x speed.
Maxells are using more and more cmags. I never encountered them before,until testing out that 1st spindle of +16x. I'd guess majority of maxell 16x media will ID as Cmags. Trying to make a few extra $$$$$$?
Maybe you can find some of the older 8x speed maxells at target? I'd get them if they had any.

saugmon- Yes The concensuss seems to be go for the big swap out ! I suppose I'll check out the local target & see what they have ! Besides Maxells like these ! I think they had sony last time I went ? whenever that was ? I'll take some of those if they have'em I don't remember if they had some 8x stuff or not ! 8x is getting kinda scarce even at non- tech based stores ! walgreens ,CVS even Wallyworld ! I got some 8x verbatims awhile back online The branded kind ! Still a Taiyo yuden fan & get the MIJ sony's where & when I can but harder & harder to Find ! So I've been picking up verbatims here & there - & since that officemax sale I'm pretty flush on the verbatims ! Well Hopefully I'll find some good media _ If I find some MIJ sony's or Maxells It'll be genuine Varmint Dancin' time you Betch'A !!!!!!!!!!!!! i know this thread's about the -R 16x Maxells but as the +R 16x were mentioned i have this to throw in - i recently bought 100 Maxell 16x +R as they code out as RICOHJPNR03 as they're quite cheap at £15.99 for 100 - http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=2...da9169499d273a4
Haven't had any issues with them yet, played back quite a few with no problems, just felt like buying something a bit cheaper than my normal 'ultra sexy Verbatim TY' :)

Creaky: Those Ricohjpn-R03's are pretty decent. Up there with Ritek-R03 and sony D11/D21. I burned a couple 50 pk tubs of those in the Office Depot +16x and all successful except for 6 bad discs in a row in 1 tub-manufacturing flaw.

creaky- alright already rub it in again - verbatims & taiyo yudens @ the same time - WE know ,but they are'nt available here ! We have to settle for Verbatim verbatims & Sony MIJ taiyo yudens or order online ! & in that case the DVD+R's cost more ! so not quite bargain - or as Borat would say "Not So Much !!!!" Update Tried returning the Maxells to local Target - Not in the system so I'm stuck for now I suppose ! Maybe I'll keep them for trashy movies LOL! Hope your luck is better than mine ! happy New years Guys !!!

i can't burn ricoh03 +r's well for some reason no matter the speed. i have two good burners(benq1655 and pioneer 111d) that love taiyo yuden but those ricohs burn with many wide spikes all the time. everyone drinks the $ony koolaid in this forum. On Cdfreaks $ony is considered crap which is why I respect that site a lot more. people actually back up their statements with quality scans on cdfreaks. $ony is not good media unless it's rebranded taiyo yuden which is less likely the case nowadays. that's a fact. I usually stop in here just to read the sales for the current week.

Here's a couple sony scans,both at an 8x burn with my Benq 1650.

Sony Yuden000-T02 at 4x which is the only scan that I could find-hence for the edit:
That huge spike at the 2 gb mark that I get is from my 1650 during the test. I've tested some plextor backups,using that 1650 to do the reading and still get that same spike. Still consistant 95-97 scores using Ty or sony media.Same with Ritek-R03 and Maxell-002-00.
