I received a "Canon ZR500" digital camcorder for Christmas. I am having trouble recording my home movies onto a DVD-R in a format which my two DVD players will recognize and play. Both of my DVD players are fairly new and have played everything I have put into them up to now.

Transfering the movie from my camcorder to my computer hasn't been a problem. I have "Firewire." I do need a process or program which will burn the movie from the hard drive onto a DVD-R in a format which my DVD players will recognize.

My thanks to any and all for your help!

there are plenty of burning programs out there, what burning programs do you have on your system, what program do you have that you are using with your camcoder? adobie, pinnicle are two good programs that will take the raw video from the dvtape and will convert it to AVI, or mpeg format, and you can use Nero, ashampoo, or any other burning program to do your burning, good luck

I use "Windows Movie Maker" to transfer the video from the camcorder to the hard drive in "AVI" format.

I did find a small program called "VSO DivX To DVD" which I use to transform the video from the "AVI" format to a "DVD" format.

I then burn the video onto a DVD-R using "Clone DVD2." The entire process take around two hours, but seems to work pretty well.

I will keep the two programs you mentioned in mind. Along with any other advice you may give me.

Thank you rdmercer1!

Here's a good tip: keep your mini DV tape as a master. Its digital quality is far superior to that of any DVD you can make from it because it uses a compression rate of about 25 Mbps. DVD compresses at about 8 Mbps for Pinnacle's "best" quality. When/if high definition media and drives become commonplace, those mini DV tapes will produce excellent quality discs of a quality not a lot below high definition camcorders being introduced today.

You can do the whole process with NeroVision Express. It does take quite a while and there are all sorts of settings to tinker with. Nowadays I use a dedicated DVD/hard disk recorder. It's so easy with one of those.
