Hi I own the entire X-Files series. A season contains 22 45min episodes on 6 DVD discs. I would like to rip all these episodes off the 6 discs compress them and reburn them to 2 or 3 DVD+R DVD-5 discs, if possible. I would prefer the episodes able to be viewed on your standard dvd player but if I have to use divx so they are only viewed on computer then I will. Before I start venturing off and ruining a bunch of DVD+R's I was just curious if anyone had done this before or have a few suggestions. Thanks

I used to do that sort of thing with tmpgenc but a 2 hour film used to take 12 hours to convert to SVCD so I don't envy you this task.

A better idea would be to look for some of the Episode Guides on this site.

To start you off, what I would do is decrypt the discs to my hard drive and use dvd2one in movie only mode to process each individual episode to its own directory on my hard drive.

Let's say I decided on 6 episodes per disc. I would delete every file that was not a VOB, take the VOBs for the first 6 episodes, renumber them sequentially and put them all in the same directory so they run together like a film.

Run IFOedit and "create IFOs" in the new directory.

Use dvd2one again in full disc mode to shrink to the correct size.

Check the finished result with PowerDVD and you should have 6 episodes with no menu. You can chapter skip to get to each episode.

Thanks for the great information but you might have misunderstood me some. There are 4 episodes per DVD-9. I can easily remove the menus and subtitles such as you described. I would rather not only just put 4 episodes on each DVD-5 but possibly 8.

Or maybe I misunderstood you. Were you suggesting I use DVD2One to shrink 6 episodes rather then messing with the whole conversion to SVCD or DIVX pain? If so how much quality loss are we talking about here? Thanks for all your help in advance.

I understood you.

I meant you should separate each of the 22 or 24 episodes in one season and THEN decide how many to put on a disc and group them together. Then use DVD2One on that bunch of episodes.

I chose 6 because that's the very maximum I would consider cramming on a disc. That's 4 hours of video and there will be some quality loss. It's up to you how much you can put up with, but at that level of compression I have no doubt you will start to see a sort of tile effect in close ups.

ademis I would say that HeeHawBoz is right.
Although I would suggest no more than 3 hrs worth or the quality will become very noticible [still no where near as bad as SVCD quality mind]

I tried writing a guide for you, but I couldn't get the Make IFO stage in IFOEdit to work. The episodes played in the wrong order.

Perhaps a better idea, once you have separated out the 22 episodes, is to find a guide for TMPEG dvd author and import your episodes using that.

I abandoned the guide but if you want to see the part that tells you how to separate the individual episodes, let me know.

I have copied two DVD-9 with four Star Trax episodes each to one DVD+R. Here is what I did:

1. Used DVD Decrypter
- Unselect unwanted extras, subtitles and additional audio tracks. (Select 2 ch stereo if available.)
- Write audio and video streams to the hard drive (de-muxing).

2. Used Ulead Moviefactory 2
- Select all the video and audio files outputted from DVD Decrypter.
- Select properties and set mpeg2 resolution to low resolution 352x288 (better than VCD quality) or medium resolution 352x576 (better than SVCD quality) for PAL DVD. (For NTSC DVD 352x240 or 352x480.) Low resolution gives you about 8 hours per DVD+R (about 10-11 episodes). Medium resolution about 6 hours (8-9 episodes). Both depending on if you want to keep high sound quality or change to 2 ch stereo mp2 (48000 Hz). Moviefactory can encode the audio as well (See under mpeg properties.).
- Movefactory can create simple DVD menus and chapters.
- Put in an empty DVD+R, hit start and go to bed.
