I have been using DVD Shrink, Nero, RipIT4me to make back ups of my DVDs. Happy I was able to do this because now my kids have scratched several burned DVDs. DVD's still play, but I recently tried to reburn a dvd on Nero from a copied DVD. Figured I could just save time and make an exact copy of my burned copy. It failed to burn and when I try RipIT4me or DVD Shrink it fails to read.

So why can't I reburn DVD from a copied DVD? What am I doing wrong? Do I always have to burn from the original DVD?

Hi ZignZag
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. More like the discs are just to bad of shape to re ripped.
Players can be more forgiving with scratches - ripping isn't- tries to rip every byte.

Usually you can just do a copy to copy when you want to do a another copy but for these looks like you'll need to use the original to get another backup.

Well, I was thinking the same thing and tried with a unscratched copied DVD and it failed on Nero copy to copy. Also tried making 2 Seinfelds one for my Cabin and the other for here at home... first from original and second burn from the unscratched copy which failed. I was able to use DVD Decrypter and Nero for the one copied DVD movie but was not able to copy Seinfeld from onother copied DVD. Had to make both back ups from Original. I just don't understand why I can't make a back up from a back up. Theoretically I should be able to by pass many steps for a quick and easy burn since I have already done the compression and protection removal.

Yes you should be able to do a copy to copy. I do and usually not a problem.

So what media are you using? Poorer quality media can degrade after time and be hard to copy from. 1st I'll try Nero - copy to copy - if that fails then I rip w/ decrypter. If that fails I pretty much know it's a lost cause.

How about the drive(s) - firmware up to date?

Sony and Memorex is what i am using.

It is not a time issue. I am doing it back to back when I tried to burn a copy of a copy of Seinfeld. It is literally seconds after I finish burning off the original when I try to copy a copy.

Ok post the last failed burn log from Nero. Let's take a peek and see what's going on.

Look here for them - just be sure to edit out the serial # - usually begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

You can find them here:
Using Nero 6: program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
Using Nero 7: programs files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

edited by creaky to leave only the last logfile entry..

Thought I was looking for a folder, Here is the Nerohistory file.

The Seinfeld burns were before Dec. 22, 2006

The movie copy from copy was the day of or just before start of this post, first try copy to copy failed but then I DVD decrypted movie copy and burned with Nero. Success on movie not Seinfeld

Seinfeld was copied from original using latest version of RipIt4Me .

Ok - here are some suggestions
DVD-Copy on the fly
When doing the copy to copy turn off burn on the fly/quick copy.

This does the copying in 'real' time so any little glitch and bam the burn fails and you have a coaster.
Let Nero save the files temporarily to the hard drive then it will start the burn.

Burn process completed successfully at 16x
Take the burn speed down to 8x.

Nero API version: 6.3.1.19
Update Nero to 6.6.0.18. Right now Nero only recognizes the burner as a generic drive - Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder

Here's the links for that version:
Package 1
Package 2 (recode, vision)

File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS' & File 'Drivers\InCDfs.SYS'
Roxio and Nero don't always play well esp. when Nero's InCd is installed.
So you can uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool.
If you're not using InCD uninstall that too and run the clean tool for it.

Hi ragui233
Using RW discs? If so do a full erase if you aren't already.
Have you tried any other media?

Post your last Nero log and we can take a peek - see my post above on where to find them.

Ok your burner is having a hard time with that +RW disc your using.

Have you tried doing a full erase on it?

Try using one that hasn't been burned to yet.

Any problems w/ - or + R media (not RW)
