i use DVD Shrink to rip dvds. sometimes the files are to big to burn on a disk. i was wondering what kind of disc the manufactorers use to fit the whole dvd onto one disk. is it a certain disc or the program they use.
They use dual layer discs also called DVD-9 and the one you're using is single layer dvd also called DVD-5,which without compression won't be able to hold all the contents of a dual layer disc.A DVD-5 like yours can hold up to 4.38Gb approximately and a dual layer one can hold up to 7.96Gb approx. There are dual layer discs available on the market and of course the price is higher for those. If you have to buy dual layer disc,i would advise you to use Verbatim media as it is the best actual dual layer disc available.
Original dvds are presses-stamped in,performed by machines. No burn is involved.Majority are DVD-9,but some are still DVD-5.
Too large for dvd shrink:
1) Eliminate all unncecessary sound streams, sub picture. You can even set some stuff as still images.
2) You can re-author-main movie only. You'll lose menu function, but the disc will autoplay when inserted into a stand alone player.Less compression, better playback quality, and faster backup process time.
3)You can use 2 blank single layer discs.
4) You can run it through DVD Shrink twice-you will sacrafice some quality.
5) Or place it on a Dual layer disc. These are under $2 a disc now.Make sure you get Verbatim if you go that route.
If going to dual layer media, I rip with DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read, and burn with ImgBurn. A very effective and fast combination for DL backups.
