I bought 1click dvd and I used it a couple times.. loved it. Then I ran out of the DVD's I had and bought a different brand. They didn't work. So I exchanged them for another brand... still didnt work. So I travel 2 hrs to where I bought the original brand and they look different now.. they used to be white, now they are silver and THEY DON'T WORK... I found another of the white ones and it does work but I have 100 dvds that the stupid program won't read. What can I do??
I have 2 DVD drives And NEC DVD_RW +/- ND 2500A and and IDE DVD Rom 16x.
No clue as to what I can do.
Most brand names of media outsource their media. This means they can have up to 4 different manufacturers for the same media. Here's some good examples using an AVG brand name like maxell:
+8X MADE IN TAIWAN: RITEK-R03
+8X MADE IN JAPAN: MAXELL-002-00
+8X MADE IN JAPAN WHITE FULL HUB PRINTABLE: MAXELL-002-00
+8x cmags-In the white full hub inkjet printable-made in taiwan.
YELLOWTOPS
-4X MADE IN TAIWAN: RITEK-G03
-4X MADE IN JAPAN: TY-G01
-4X MADE IN JAPAN: MXL-RG02
GOLDTOPS
-8X MADE IN TAIWAN: RITEK-G05
-8X MADE IN JAPAN: MXL-RG03
-8x Made in Taiwan: Cmags
Use dvdidentifier to locate the MID codes of your blank media, and also find the MID code of your successful backups and see how that MID code changes:
The same outsourcing occurs with sony, fuji, tdk, memosux,HP,office depot, staples, etc. You buy a spindle, they work great, but when you buy another spindle-problemo. Usually it's a firmware issue. Firmware is the programming for a burner that controls the writing strategy so it can properly burn your media. It reads the MID code of your media. Switch media, you often switch MID codes. If the firmware isn't programmed for a certain MID coded media, you'll get a failed during lead-in error on your burn log. This will give some media a bad rap because the burner wasn't programmed to handle a certain media.
You've got an older drive- NEC-2500A.It may have trouble with some of the newer 16x speed blank media. Old drive's aren't updated as often as the newer drives. It's like the manufacturers are telling you to update to a newer model of burner.
Find out what the current firmware version is,using dvdidentifier. Match it up with the following link or post back that firmware version:
Notice there are 2 different types of firmware for the NEC2500A. The standard-latest update being 1.0B and the Fujitsu/Siemens oem of 1.9b. Watch out for which version that you need. There's a big difference between the 2 and a bad flash can ruin a drive.
I'm not sure how NEC's are updated, but should be something like: Download to a zip file-remember where it goes, close everything out, open up that folder and let it download to the pc like a normal program. Make sure there will be no power interuptions like storms,no disc is inserted into the NEC drive and follow the intructions to the final T.
I appreciate your help... I see that the CompUSA discs are different. One says PRINCO the other says DAXON Technologies
as for the rom

You've got the original firmware for your drive, being v 1.06 so it is way outdated. The updates for your drive are: 1.07/1.09/1.0A/and 1.0B- with the 1.0B Should be the latest,up to date firmware for your drive.
That other firmware- 1.8B and 1.9B is most likely the rebadged Nec 2500A,so a totally different firmware.
Princo and Daxon are on the low quality spectrum-as with most store brand media like Staple's,compusa, nextech. Office Depot has some decent manufacturers for their brand named media: Ritek and Ricohjpn are the only 2 I have encountered.
With the programming of your firmware, that is a list of media that your manufacturer-NEC-recommends your burner to use. You're going to have to eventually update it anyways with all the 4x media extinct and the 8x media is almost extinct.
There is a slight risk to a flash. You should go over to cdfreaks.com for the drives, then locate the room with all the NEC drives. They know their stuff when it comes to flashing, crossflashing, and using hacked firmware.
In the worse case scenario, you can get a new burner for under $35 with shipping at newegg.com.
Here's a link to cdfreaks NEC drives room,so you may want to do some research for the proper flashing process:
