I know by reading here that Taiyo Yuden and Verbatum is the DVD+R media of choice. I was thinking of trying BenQ media, since I have a BenQ burner. Anyone ever tried those ?

Also, is it better to burn slower, even if you have 16x capability ?

And lastly. How do you get a movie to look good on a Plasma 42" HDTV ? Do you need special software ? Thanks for ANY help.

Honestly, I've never tried BenQ media before, so I can't comment on that. The only media I recommend are 1st class: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Hitachi Maxell (Made In Japan by Hitachi Corp.)

Yes, it's wise to burn half of the speed. So if you're using 16X, you can try 12X, 10X or 8X. However, if your burner has the latest firmware and is capable of burning 16X, it won't hurt to try at 16X, but you're more than likely to get "coaster" that way. However, the choice is yours.

To get the best quality on your backups, you'll need to use DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 or ProCoder 2. I have a 55" Widescreen SONY HDTV and I'm using DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.70 to encode half (60%) of my backups and the quality looks amazing.

If you're using DVD Shrink, then make sure to use "DA + AEC + Max Smooth/Sharp" and you'll be fine.

Best of luck!!

Also, if I use 16x media and I want to burn at 12x or 10x, how do I control the speed on DVDShrink. This will be the last question, as I know this is off the forums topic. If I have anymore, I will move to the correct forum. Thanks So Much. HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Which model# of benq do you have?

I've got 4 of them.

Here's a couple of MID codes for Benq media, both being the 8x speed:

BenQ DVD+R 8x (DAXON AZ2)
BenQ DVD-R 8x (SONY08D1)

Huge quality difference between the dash and plus format, which I'd highly advise staying away from anything made by DAXON for best possible playback. The media qaulity will reflect with playback quality. That's why top quality media is recommended like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and I also love the Hitachi Maxells.

1)Keep compression to a minimum.Main movie only if possible. Burn half of what the rated speed of your blank media. If opting with verbatim,Benq drives perform better at the 8x and 12x speed.Beware of slow burning with Verbatim.
Any compression,do like Alkohol posted and use the quality settings tab in DVD Shrink. I prefer Max Sharpness.

2)Use quality plus format media and booktype them to dvd-rom.The booktyped benq backups will be the highest compatable backups, compared to the dash and the plus format.Qsuite can do the booktyping for you. Media quality is the #1 issue around here, and stand alone players can tell the difference-when you get bad playback.

What program are you using to do the burning? Nero,DVD Decrypter,CopyToDVD,ImgBurn?

Using autoburn function of DVD Shrink or burning the ISO?

After you click backup-you'll see all the backup options tabs, click on the burn speed tab and it'll show you your speed options.

If using single drive pc and autoburning with shrink, you may have limited burn speed options: 1x/2x/2.4x/and max. Max is not good with 8x media and benq drives.Benq's will overburn most 8x media at 12x and 16x,so watch that Max burn setting. Also slow burning gives me a lot of crc errors,so you have to be cautious of that as well.

On my backup, single drive pc: I rip using DVD Shrink and original kicks out. When it asks for a blank,I abort. I then open up DVD Shrink, open files, find the movie again, let it analyze again, and then backup. Then after clicking the burn speed tab,All of my settings are available- 2.4x/4x/8x/12x/and 16x.

Dual drives, then you will have all burn these speed settings available:2.4x/4x/8x/12x/16x. No 6x or 10x option is available using DVD Shrink.

8x is pretty much my standard, unless it's crap media, then I'll take her down to 4x. Burning too fast may give your stand alone player/s a lower quality playback.

Because of these benqs overburning 8x media, I use qsuite 2.0 to keep them from doing so.It works for the 1640/1650/and 1655,but not the 1620.

Post back some info and I may be able to give you a more accurate answer and I can link you to some great benq tools like qsuite:

Dual drives or is that benq drive is only drive?
Model# of that benq?
Programs being used? Nero,DVD Decrypter,etc?

Thanks. I have a BenQ 1640 which I use to read and burn with. I decided against the BenQ media. I'm going to get Verbatim. Just don't know if I should get 8x or 16x. I've used both before with other brands. I didn't really notice a difference in the quality. But then again, I never messed with any settings in the software. I either use DVDx-copy Platinum or DVDShrink. I've got Nero 6 Ultra (Didn't know you could back-up original disc with Nero, because of the encryption. Plus, never been told how), and Imageburn and have downloaded others, but I'm the type that needs to be shown once, before I know the steps to use it. So I never figured them out. I tried the quality tab on Shrink after I clicked the Back-up tab, but I couldn't check the boxes for quality settings. I don't know why. I saw where I can adjust the speed. I just analyze and write my back-ups. Nothing too tecnical.

Nero can only backup an already ripped movie or VIDEO_TS folder (BUP, IFO, VOB files) via hard drive. You can have DVDFab Decrypter (FREE) or RipIt4Me (FREE) to handle the ripping process.

NOTE: Max Smooth or Max Sharp; your gonna have to test and try it out for yourself to see which one is the best choice for you.

DVD Shrink can produce great quality, if using the below settings. It will take longer, but you'll be happy with the end results.

My experience with Benq +R (4X Daxon) media was the dye did NOT go to the outer edge, so unless you can set the output to 4300 or less you got pixelation in the last 10-15 minutes. It was not as bad as CMCMag but close. I would not recommend them.

DVDXCopy Platinum, you cannot control burning to the outer edge, so if you are doing "Movie only", you WILL get pixelation with Benq's + media.

Thanks guys. But like I said earlier. Shrink won't let me click on the quality boxes. I don't know what's up with that.

If those quality settings are grayed out, then no compression is needed. After shrink has opened up your movie, look under Compression settings for VIDEO/ AUTOMATIC. If that number says 100,then no compression. If it says 75,then you have 25% compression and those quality settings should be lit up.

If you do a lot of main movie only backups,a lot of them will have no compression, depending on the bitrate.

I have had no problems burning BenQ media. Their CD-R media using dataguard are without doubt one of the best out their for the price.
I have used hundreds of Daxon dvd's and have had no problems.
They are an excellent secong teir disc for friends and family.
I personally use TY, MCC, Sony and MXL for my own copies.

What formula is that ?? My only choices are : Maximum Smoothness, Smooth, Sharp (default) or Maximum Sharpness. No combinations.
