Well I admit im not much of a hardware man so I need some help. My brother called and told me his computer doesn't recognize his DVD Rom, or DVD burner, and I realize this is kinda general question but what is normal protocol for troubleshooting this type of problem ? He thinks I can fix anything but in reality that's not true by no means. Thanks a million ;

Check the burner is set to MASTER and the rom is set to SLAVE on the jumpers.

See this.

If that doesn't help, go into Hardware Manager and uninstall your drives through there, then rebbot and let windows auto install them again, see if that helps.

Get back to me.

As Ripper rightly says..check the jumpers. While you are in there check all cables, replace/substitute is the best test with an ide cable.

It's not likely. but I have seen this from a failed drive controller on the motherboard. Test each drive on the same cable as the harddrive, or in an add on usb drive case.

Ripper..we see a lot of fairly new Dell E-machines with this fault in the shop.. It's a faulty mobo every time.

Talking of IDE controllers, in hardwarer manager, when you try uninstalling the drives and reinstalling, aslo do that to your IDE controllers.

Don't worry, everything will reinstall @ boot up.

Thanks for the quick response. The Master Slave thingy on the Rom and Burner were both set wrong. It seems to be working fine now. I guess Dell had to cut back some where cause yea their Motherboards are kinda junkie from what I hear, lol. Oh by the way my brother has some kinda home made computer. Thanks again everybody;

Ok cool. But you mention it's a Dell, so just to be sure, set your SLAVE drive to CABLE SELECT (the only one left after MASTER), cos that's how dell pcs work best. :)

Just a little info ^^

Glad it's sorted!
