I have a BenQ DW1640. My PC just does have the min. specs that the burner calls for. So would it be better to use 8x media instead of the 16x which the burner is capable of, since my PC isn't beefed up ?? Thanks.

just use 8x media, burn at 8x or 4x even.
For 16x media you should be able to burn it at 8x.. i have a few DW1650's and burn all my 8x and 16x media at 8x

Thanks. I just checked on DVD Shrink. My highest option other than Maximum was 2.4x on my old PC (which is where I burn 95% of my discs, and where my BenQ is). On my new PC, with the same software, my options are 4x and 8x (HP 640b) . Is this because of the different speeds of the PCs or different burners ? I've always just kept it on Maximum. How can I tell what it's burning at on Maximum ? My concern is, that I was going to get Verbatim media. And a reliable poster here said that I won't get good results if I burn Verbatim at too low of speeds. Thanks again.

make sure burners' firmware is up to date, firmware is what 'teaches' the burner about burn speeds, newer discs etc.

As to burning at too low a speed, apparently it's not recommended to burn 16x discs too slowly. The only 16x discs i have to burn at 4x (on my Benq DW1650's as it happens) are certain Verbatim (MCC004 coded Verbatim) but that's only as they nearly always error out on me at 8x (which is odd and damn annoying, especially as it happens on both of my Benq DW1650's - one is mounted internally, the other lives in a USB2.0 enclosure). Also i burn ALL other discs fine at 8x, and i burn a LOT of discs, very often, so i know the burners/burning habits are fine...

Is that a problem specific to BenQ 1650's exclusively that one might not have on 1620/1640's? (question directed at mod, please)
