Toshiba DVD Recorder/Player Not playing backup Dvd's

Bought a LG recorder initially that would not play my backup dvd's. Took it back and bought a Toshiba D-R5SU recorder.. still having the same problem. It will play about the first 15 minutes or so of DVD then it will start to malfunction, just like the LG player did. The Toshiba records in Dvd-R/-RW/-Ram. The LG recorder was supposed to be compatible for all formats. I am using Imation DVD-R dvd's. My burner is a Toshiba (-)Burner and I am burning at 2x. Both recorders were upconverters. Would like to use the upconvert DVD players but I have had no problems with play-back on any of my older DVD players. Someone help me please.
