Lite-On 5005 Update

I've had this recorder since Jan 2005 and it works nicely. It is the original LWW5005 too. However, I ran out of the older DVD blanks that worked well with it. It doesn't take the newer DVD's I use on my PC's, like Maxell and Fuji. Is it just too old?

Will the latest FW update take care of the drive inconsistencies? Lite-On used to have a drive and system FW, but I don't see that. Maybe I didn't look in the right place (Lite-On site)

Or do I find a $50 DVD burner to put in the unit? If so, which one?

be careful if you upgrade the firmware macrovision hacks can stop working

Is correct in the caution, in firmware upgrades

I have both the 1140 and 1840 versions. Be carfull
The units at p[resent] have the original drives but have had new 1693s drives installed. both have firmware versions 098
I have had no problems using DVD disks 4x to 16x with firmware 086 to 098 or Higher
If you are having problems with disks.
