I have a 40 GB Maxtor 6LO40J2 (DiamondMax Plus D740X) set on the black cable with the master settings taken from the following website:

http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor...%20Plus%20D740X

I have just got a new drive to use as a slave it is a Hitachi HDS728080PLAT20 set to slave on the grey cable with the settings taken from the following website. I have used the 15 Logical head settings to rule out non detection due to 16x16 = 256 problems (although it doesn't work with 16 either):

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k80/7k80jum.htm

I can't detect the slave in BIOS or My Copmuter ---> Management

I am guessing the power is dead because I can't hear the drive but the rest of my computer is so noisy it's hard to tell for certain. I don't see why the power would be dead becaue I am using a splitter lead that connects to my Master

:(

I have tried a lot of different jumper settings to be sure. Could that damage it?

What else can I try?

I fear that maybe I broke the hard drive by handling it without enough care...

Thanks,

David McKechan

The power cable definitely works because I switched it and the Master worked. I am pretty sure I cannot hear the new drive spinning.

If the jumper settings are incorrect will the drive still spin? If so then I know that the drive is faulty...

yes the drives will still spin no matter where the jumpers are set at. u might have a faulty hard drive. i had a sata 160gb and it turned out it wasnt working properly. when u hook up ur hard drive and all the cables are set properly turn on ur computer and put ur fingers on top of the hard drive and see if u can feel any vibration. if not try switching the ide cables maybe they're faulty.

And to be fully sure the drive will spin if the IDE cables are incorrect (they are not!)?
