I have read through all the various threads on this subject, but the causes of the problem and proprosed solutions do not seem to apply to my specific case:
I have broadband internet access (cable) at home. No local network, no router, just a standard Motorola SB5101 cable modem.
I have been running Azureus for about a week now under Windows XP SP2 and everything has been going fine. Decent download speeds, no connectivity issues.
Last night I did an automatic Windows update and downloaded some critical security updates, as well as installing Internet Explorer 7. After completing that update and rebooting the computer, Azureus still worked fine and proceeded to resume and finish the active download as usual.
BUT, since then, any time I try to download anything I get the red "Firewalled" status at the bottom of the screen and cannot connect at all. The icon to the right of that is green and shows over a million users currently connected, but downloads always fail to start because of that "Firewalled" status.
When I do the Nat/Firewall test from within Azureus, it works perfectly and says everything is okay, both with the default port (6881) and every other port I've tried between 53000 and 65534.
I had been using Windows XP's built-in firewall previously without problems, with Azureus set to be allowed through as an exception. It never interfered before. I have disabled the firewall completely for test purposes, and no difference. Azureus stil says it is firewalled.
My problem does not have to do with routers or port forwarding because my connection is not that complicated and it's not my ISP because it all worked perfectly before. The only thing that changed is I did a windows update and installed IE7.
I read in one of the threads that if my local IP address changes that could create a problem for Azureus? Is that true? Since I don't have a static IP my IP changes every time I turn the modem off and on, or reboot the computer. If that is the problem, I do I fix it and get Azureus to recognize my new IP address every time it changes?
Can anyone help? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions outside of the standard router/portforwarding jazz since that stuff doesn't apply to me, and it's not that kind of problem as evidenced by the fact that everything worked flawlessly before the Windows update.
I'll hope for some replies, thanks in advance..

I am having the same problem. After installing updates and IE7, Azureus is now firewall. It was working perfect before updates. My ports are forwarded in my router, Windows firewall is turned off. I checked my ip address because it will change sometimes, but the ports are forwarded for the ip address I have. I uninstalled IE7 but Azureus still remains firewall. Again, I repeat, the only changes have been to install windows updates. Any advice would be very helpful.
Thank you

Check for connectivity with the >tools>NAT-firewall test.. choose a different port until you find one that works. Some ISP's block certain ones for various reasons. Mine always says firewalled for a few minutes at startup.

I have tried that over and over, however, I went back to the ports that were working before the updates. I feel very strongly that something in the update turned on a firewall somewhere. I even tried to do a system restore but was unable to restore to an eariler time for some reason. I plan on trying that again tomorrow.

Well as I'm not psychic and can't guess what possible configuration you might have I will suggest a port up in the 45xxx range, forwarded through any router and set as an exception in any firewall for both TCP and UDP connections. remember to hit "save" at the bottom.. ;-)

I have a bellsouth dsl router running into a bufflo airstation router, with one port from that running into a vontage linskey router for telephone. I have forwarded the bufllo router ports. I do not have a static ip but I do check to see if my ip address matches the ip address forwarded in the bufflo router. It does. I cannot access the linskey router as it is not a wireless router and I am not running thru that.
Does that help at all or does it sound as confusing I think it sounds? At the moment I do not have a firewall installed and I have turned off the XP firewall. I do have Kaspersky AV, put it does not provide a firewall, I have turned that off as well for a while and it did not change anything.
I feel as if I have had a good handle on things like this, and usually am the "go-to-guy" when friends have problems like this, but I CAN NOT figure this out. I have googled everything I can think of. The updates did something, I just do not know what. I have also changed the ports to 45xxx range and still no luck.
Thanks for any help.

I uninstalled the IE7 after I could not fix the problem and when back to the previous IE that I had but it still left me with a problem. I am considering going to Firefox and see if I have a problem with that as well.

Okay I was the original poster in this thread, and I did not have any success with any methods suggested, until...
I completely uninstalled Azureus altogether, then manually deleted the folder where it stores all its settings (usually C:\Documents and settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Azureus) along with all the files in there, then rebooted, then reinstalled Azureus (might have rebooted again after that, though I don't think it matters).
With that done, the "firewalled" problem has gone away and Azureus has gone back to working the way it did before the Windows and IE7 updates. Windows must have changed something in how it handled the settings during the update. Hope this works for the rest of you...

hi, i have the same problem and i tried your solution, which is to uninstall and reinstall Azureus. But it didnt work for me.
My download rate got worse, its less than 1kB for only 1 torrent file.
Mine settings are the same as yours, a dsl cable modem (called speedstream 4200). And i have also open the port in the Windows firewall.
but the download speed is still very low. any advice to improve?

Make sure that you also manually delete all the files both in the Azureus program folder and the settings folder (Documents and Settings etc..) as these do not all get removed by the uninstall process. Then reboot, then reinstall. This fixed my "firewalled" problem, but I can't be sure about yours.
