NEC ND1300 writing speed

I have some DVD-RW discs from VIVASTAR. They have no rated speed on the box/DVD cover and NEROSpeed does not show up what their max write speed is.
When burning a few AVI files onto the DVD, NERO (oem that came with the drive) defaults to write speed x1 and gives no other speed option. Is that due to the DVD I am using? The drive supports x2 for -RW.
