Hi every1,

I use "Audacity" to record my 12" vinyl to Hard disk, However I exported a track as a MP3 (320kps). On playback I noticed I had lost alot of bass and some mid range. I had a reply some weeks ago on a simillar subject from "Dunker" I think!? anyway he/she said to export the file as a WAV, because this is a "raw" file, SO will this improve the bass quality?

Which leads me on to my main question! as quality is important to me, what free "MP3 Encoder" should I use??? musicmatch? Lame? etc

thank you

I don't think the fact that you exported the file as a mp3 has anything to do with the file not sounding good. What does the music sound like while you are recording it? Also, do you have a phono preamp or amp/receiver between the turntable and the computer. If the output of audacity (mp3) sounds bad , I bet the input sounds bad also.

Hi undine, thanks for the quick post! since posting the thread, I have been recording some more with better results!!

The way I output the music, is I use a Technics turntable with a super quality Cart & Styli, use a DJM600 Pioneer mixer, set the output levels at +7db on the phono line, then 0db on the master output, this then goes in to the External input on my Technics hi fi amp, then I use an anolog lead from the Ext to a jack plug in the rear of my PC.

I record at 320kps, 44100hz, 16Bit-rate, x2-Stereo

So far the bass and mid range sound good, but not as good as MP3's I pay for!? is this down to the basic recording software I use??

You may be comparing Apples to oranges.I would compare the burned cdr to the same music from the vinyl.
