Xbox game backups??

Okay...so, yesterday, the damn dog ate some of my Sopranos episodes...today, he ate my newest Xbox game (NCAA Football 2004). I have never thought of this, but is it possible to backup Xbox games with a DVD Writer and then play them in the Xbox (I do realize that there is a good chance that even if these backups can be made, that you will need a modchip)?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? If possible, can anyone provide me with a "complete" guide that will tell me everything I need to know about mod chips, where to buy them, how to install them, programs I might need, how to backup games, etc?

I realize this is asking a lot, but any help would be appreciated.
