firmware is the software than controlls the drive/device however the software is not stored on the PC hardrive but rather a ROM chip in the drive/device it's self. Its the most basica programing needed to work the drive/device

A quick way to check is to use DVD Decrypter's firmware checking utility.

Open Decrypter and select Mode > ISO > Write. Click the Destination drop down menu and select your burner if it isn't already listed there.

Select Tools > Drive > "Check for Firmware updates".

This will list your current firmware, and will "automate the search" at rpc1.org for current firmware.

You can do the same thing with ImgBurn.

not often , i had my PX-716A for over a year and its only had one firmware update.

example:when new media hits the market like the 16x speed most drives will need an update

We shall go to the end,we shall fight in France,we shall fight on the seas and oceans,we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills;we shall never surrender
