Hello all, I love this forum. I know that burning speed is a factor when trying to get the best quality, but is the speed rating also a factor when purchasing DVD-R's? Does it matter if I were to by 16x vs 8x?

And also I here a lot of good things about Verbatim, and Taiyo. I can't find any local retailers that sell Taiyo. I need to get some new media today. Also I need(want) light scribe. So I know i can get Verbatim at Comp USA, and Best Buy. So would these be an exceptable choice?

yes the Verbatim are an excellent choice so your def. ok with them

the Taiyo Yudens you will not find under that name BUT if you can find "Made In Japan" Sony or Fujifilm media they will code out as Taiyo Yuden ,Maxell MIJ are also some of the best media out there on the market

the 8x vs. 16x will not matter you don't want to burn above 8x anyway. i like the 8x better (personal choice) but you will ok with he 16x just make sure your drive has the latest firmware update to support the 16x media

Those verbatim's are very good stuff. 8x or 16x speed.Their 4x media was also pretty good.
The 16x verbs were designed to be burned fast,so be cautious if you burn slow. 8x and 12x should be no problemo with them, depending on your players.

They're easy to find on sale: Office max, office depot, bestbuy, etc. $15 max per spindle of 50 when on sale. They'll also run sales for verbatim Lightscribe media.

4x media is about extinct,8x is almost there,so majority of media left is 16x.

The MID code will change if switching from 8x media to 16x. Brand named media like HP,TDK,Memorex,Philips,Sony, etc. Same goes with store brand named media like staples, compusa,. That's why taiyo yuden and verbatim are recommended-very little outsourcing to other manufacturers.

Lightscribe and DL media: Verbatim is top dog.Mitsubishi dye. Cmags are also very common on the LS media-HP.

With the switching to the newer/faster media-some burners may need a firmware update to handle them. Usually with older drives. The major symptom of when firmware needs updated is when you get a different batch of media and the burn fails during the lead-in phase, giving you a no disc error.
