I am still fairly new to all of this, and I can't say enough how happy I am I found afterdawn.com, thank you all for your answers. It all started when I bought my first DVD burner. It's a LG, exact model not sure, but it does light scribe. I have light scribed about 5 discs. Each one getting more and more temperamental. I keep getting fails/errors because it isn't recognizing the disc. They are Memorex (spare me, I now know they are junk). I just want an opinion if anyone knows; could it be the media, or is my Burner screwed up.

I will bot touch anything besides Verbatim, probably burned 100 lightscribe discs and only had one coaster (defective), there seems to be an ongoing batle of which is better, Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim but when it comes to LS...Verbatim is the way to go. They just released new colored DVD's....so now instead of just gold there is also blue, red and green. If you beleong to Sams club they usually have 30 pk for $24.99 and every once and a while you will find as low as $19.99

I loved it, used it for about a year but just got a great deal on an Epson CD/DVD printer so now this is what I use for labeling my discs...

Thanks for that bit of info. I will definately check out Sams Club. But in the mean time I think I figured out why it was rejecting discs; I had AnyDVD running. Or at least we'll see, I try another one and see what happens.

tj:

What are you backing up and how are you doing it?

Anydvd does give a few pcs fits. The majority of people having trouble with it is when they have it activated, and there's no problematic encryption on it.

Others use it for On The Fly,which is way riskier.

Another note, when windows detects 5 or 6 burn errors in a row,it'll revert the the transfer mode into pio mode. The transfer mode needs to be DMA,UDMA,or if available:

Go into device manager, locate the primary and secondary controllers, open up each by double clicking, click advanced settings. Make sure device 0 and 1 say DMA,UDMA,or either of those with If capable. Make sure they don't say Pio mode.

If one or more says pio mode, click driver tab,uninstall-reboot,1 controller at a time. Windows xp will hook them back up again.

With the low quality media manufacturers, they can throw those controllers off as well as a worse picture during playback.

Memorex outsources their media: MCC,Cmags,Ritek,Ricohjpn-so hard telling which ones you got. I haven't seen memorex LS media, but I'd bet they are cmags, just like HP's LS media.

For lightscribe, single, and Dual Layer media- Verbatim!!! They can prevent a lot of issues.

Sometimes when a burner won't recognize a blank disc,it may be a firmware issue. Post back the exact model# and the current firmware version by using Nero infotool, dvdidentifier, dvdinfopro, etc. Here's some freeware called dvdidentifier. Also tell us what the MID code is for those memorex blanks:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

That program will find the answers exact model#,firmware version, and MID code of your blank media.

Just curious--now that you know AnyDVD was the cause of the problem, are the Memorex still "junk"? If they work, your original conclusion was wrong. LightScribe media and drives need a license from HP, and only a few media manufacturers have that license. CMC, which makes both the Verbatim LightScribe and Memorex LightScribe discs, is one of the licensees. Ritek is not.
