Hi there

New to the forum, so firstly hello!

Could you help me with a small problem that I have been getting. I wanted to make backups of some MP3 files, so I went out and purchased a Philips DVDR1660P1 (Firmware 1.6, latest) DVD writer drive and I am also running Nero 6.6.1.4 (as part of the Nero 6 Suite) - I'm using Logik DVD+R discs as well as Sony DVD-R discs.

Firstly I should say the drive seems to be able to read normal DVD's without any problem, and is very responsive. However when I put in one of the blank DVD's for writing, Nero reports "No Disc Inserted or drive not ready, please try again", and also it reports no disc present in My Computer.

Now the really weird thing is, every now and again when I put in it does work (less than 10% of the time), but when I try to record a disc even at low write speeds like 2x and 4x, it gives me a "session fixation error" - although I have managed one sucess out of probably two dozen attempts.

I have enclosed the Nero log in case it helps.

I would appreciate any suggestions on how to solve the problem as its driving me around the bend at the moment! All the best.

Nero Version: 6.6.1.4
This is a buggy version of Nero. Uninstall, run the Nero 6 Clean Tool, and then install version 6.6.0.18 from the two links below:

You have a lot of memory in use at the time of burning. Shutdown any unnecessary programs and don't multitask.

The Nero InCD packet writing software has been known to interfere with burning. Unless you really need and use it, use the Nero InCD Clean Tool to remove it:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/InCD_Clean_Tool.html

Accordig to the Philips site you have the latest firmware available for that burner P1.6.

http://www.storageupdates.philips.com/en/dvdrw.html

The Logik +R disks you're using are of poor quality. They are made by CMC Magnetics most of the time I think. It appears your burner firmware doesn't even recognize them which may be accounting for the errors. Try to use good quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony disks.

You might try increasing your burn speed to 4X.

You might also try uninstalling/resetting your burner with Device Manager as follows"

- Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
- Click the Hardware tab and the Device Manager button.
- Click the "+" symbol beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
- Right click on the name of your burner Philips DVDR1660P1 and select Uninstall.
- Click OK and restart your system.

Let us know if any of the above solves your problems.

Edit: Added text below:

Since you're burning an ISO image file, try using ImgBurn (free):

Hi.

Did you change the firmware on your drive? In your first post, it's version P1.6. In this latter post, it's P1.5.

Hi LaddyBoy

Yeah, I did. I thought maybe that was the issue so I downgraded it. Funnily enough, the problem I was having were discs were not reconised does seem to have gone away as a result.

I will keep it at this version for now and if the problems persist will try and upgrade it again.

Thanks again for your help!

@Balearic

You might want to install a better version of Nero 6.6; Nero 6.6.0.18 which will let Shrink integrate with Nero 6.6. 6.6.1.4 will not autoburn with Shrink.

To Go Back To Nero 6.6.0.18

Write down your Nero serial# and then uninstall version 6.6.1.4 from your system using the general cleantool found here:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html

After using the clean tool you might want to use a registry cleaner like ccleaner which is free here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1

Then defrag your HDD

Next, download and install version 6.6.0.18 from the links provided, re-enter the serial# and you're good to go.

nero version 6.6.0.18 updates:
Package 1

Nero Version: 6.6.1.4

This is a buggy version of Nero. Uninstall, run the Nero 6 Clean Tool, and then install version 6.6.0.18 from the two links below:

Hi Laddyboy

Just followed your instructions. I used the clean tools and then reloaded Nero 6 without InCD and installed the patches you recommended.

Also I reinstalled the DVD drive as per your instructions.

Unfortunetly it continues not to work, although I have had a single sucessful copy yesterday. Do you think the drive maybe faulty all the same?

Here is the log; Thank you again for your help!

Hi.

It could be that your burner is bad or that it isn't caring for the media you're feeding it. The Nero log is not indicating the actual manufacturer of the media you're using and that's never a good sign and indicates something is wrong.

I would like you to try burning the ISO with ImgBurn. It's a free program. If that works, there's a problem with Nero and your burner. If it doesn't, it adds evidence that your burner is faulty. Don't use RW media with ImgBurn. See if it'll burn a -R or +R disk.

http://www.imgburn.com

The only way to really test to see if the burner is bad or if it's a problem with your system is to install the burner in another system to see if it works there or not. If it doesn't, it's likely bad. If it does, there''s something in your system causing the problem that needs identifying.
