They'll code as Sony D21 and pretty decent. I may be picking up a 100 pk spindle tomorrow at staple's for $25. I will try to find the MIJ sony Ty's on their 50 pks for $15. If no dice, then the 100 pk.

BTW:Spindles of Sony +1x-16x saying MIJ on the label will also code as SonyD21.

Why? Convenient for me and my supply is running low. No verbatim or maxells on sale locally. I still get consistant 95 scores on nero's disc quality scans with sonyD21. I have no trouble burning them at 8x and perfect playback.

The 16x Sony -R MIJ is TY media. Look for the octagon spacer.

You can get the 100-pack for only $4.98 at Staples. You can get a $20 Staples coupon by signing up for a trial magazine subscription at one of the Staples computer terminals (usually in the furniture section), and then use it to buy these. You need a valid credit card to signup, but you can cancel a week or two later and not be charged. Go over to SlickDeals or FatWallet and search for the thread on the coupon.

Sony's putting labels on the top of their spindles that cover up the foam spacers, making it harder to find the sony tys.

In that case look for MIJ on the surrounding label!

The Made in Japan on sony +1x-16x will still yield the same SonyD21 MID code,as the Made In Taiwan SonyD21's. If the foam spacer is visible, you can go by that. If the spacer is covered up,most likely the plus format will be sony media, and a better shot at getting Ty-G03's in the dash 1x-16x.

I've burned many of the +1x-16x from both taiwan and japan and still pretty decent media. I cannot tell a difference. I'd rate up there with Ritek and Ricohjpn.

Sony is notorious for using the same MID code from different countries:

Here's what I ran into the last 2 and a half years:

SONY

-1x-4X MADE IN TAIWAN/INDIA: SONY4D1
-1x-8X MADE IN TAIWAN/JAPAN: SONY08D1
-1x-16X MADE IN JAPAN: TY-G03

+1x-4X MADE IN TAIWAN: RICOHJPN-R02
+1x-8X MADE IN TAIWAN: SONYD12
+1x-8X MADE IN JAPAN: YUDEN000-T02

+1x-16X MADE IN JAPAN/TAIWAN: SONYD21- reports of Yuden000-T03 on some of the japanese spindles with white/octagon spacers.

All decent to awesome media, except the slower 1x-4x and 4x speed, which should be extinct.

My playback looks almost like i'm watching the original-near perfection, but I keep the burn at 4x or 8x.. Just like my verbatim, sony Tys,Ritek, and Hitachi media.

Consistant 94-96 Nero scans, while I get 75 on my fuji prodisc scans.

I picked up the last 100 pk of +1x-16x. I had an empty HP ink cart in the car and forgot to use it for $3 off,UGGH!. Walmart didn't have any sony there to price match-mostly imation and maxell.

My player did play everything to near perfection, until last night. I used a +16x maxell cmag and had a bad freezing and skipping at the 10 min spot. It's the entire disc from a DVD-5-so no compression.

From what I heard on cdfreaks.com,they consider sony as junk and worship cmags.

I re-did that movie. Because nero's quality scan won't work on my plextor,I used my Benq 1620 to do the test. Here's the scans.

4x burn from the Plextor PX-716A,ripped entire disc with DVD Shrink, autoburned with Nero.

+16x maxell cmags,UGGH!

Lots of playback issues in the first 10 mins of that backup.

SonyD21,Made in Taiwan, exact same process as the above:

Looking for MIJ Sonys isnt worth it anymore in my area. Someone else may have luck in another area though. I will say this....I LOVE the Sony 16x +R and -R's! My scans are the same, or better than my MIJ TY Sony's, which i always burned at 4x. Im burning all my Sony's at 16x now and have had nothing but excellent burns. I do prefer the D21's to the TYG03's though. Matter of fact I just went through my second 100 pk. For the price(on sale) and easy access(Staples 10 minutes from my house) I just cant let myself buy anything else. If you buy them I really hope you have as much luck(and fun) as I have. Take care!

It all depends on which format and how you want to purchase your media.

Which format, from your burner/s,does your stand alone players prefer? Some players prefer dash, plus, both,or none. It's the compatability factor.

On the web, dash is cheaper than the plus for some ungodly reason that we have not figured out yet. Check out the price differences for shiny inkjet printable media and you'll see a huge difference. It's easier to find genuine Taiyo Yuden.

Local,on-sale media-which I prefer-the Plus format is the same as the dash. I booktype my backups to dvd-rom,for the highest compatable backups. I also have major issues with Fed ex,UPS,and USPS.

High quality media runs 25-30 cents each, when on sale locally.Don't pay over that price or you're getting a good screwing.
This includes verbatim,sony-fuji tys,and maxell hitachi's. It's hard to find ligit Taiyo Yuden media locally. Lots of tys in the japanese sony and fuji in the 8x speed, not so much with the 16x speed.
For sony ty's in the 16x speed,I have gotten them on the -1x-16x speed at staple's and the spindles had white octagon foam spacers, securing the discs. Not the white round or round gray spacers. You can't go by Made in Japan on the +1x-16x sony. Both japanese and taiwan spindles will yield SonyD21 media.

Maxell Hitachi: Again, lots in the 8x speed that say made in japan. Taiwanese maxells will be riteks or cmags.

Or do the easy way and skip all brand named media except for Verbatim. Easy to get locally-best buy/office max/office depot,on sale $13-$15 a 50 pk, and advanced metal azo dye-just like taiyo yuden.

I like sony media, except for the older 1x-4x and 4x speed. Taiwan or Japan,it's all decent to top notch stuff. I've burned over 500 and they still perform like any of my tys, verbs, ritek, and ricohs.Great playback, and just a couple pts lower on my Nero quality scans.

Hitachi & TY media is great if you can find it locally on sale. However I usually get my TY online as it's cheap enough that way.

bratcher- true ! It's much easier to get Japanesse made Media - Online ! Albeit mainly Taiyo Yuden ! and being the Sony & Fuji MIJ media we all seem to be lusting/ questing after is Taiyo yuden under the skin this is not a bad thing !The Maxell/Hitachi Mij media Can still be found here & there in brick and mortar stores . I have'nt found a online source for those though I'm sure one may exist somewhere! You can often find the Maxell MIJ's at Officedepot in the maxell printables But those are seldom onsale & maybe CMC as well ( Gotta read them wrappers ) But they do exist ! But as Saugmon said for some strange & ungodly reason online in the case of DVD+R media it is much more expensive than DVD-R , where as buying locally or atleast branded media , Sony , verbatim , Maxell ect... the price is the same ! Go figure ? and also as he said you can just buy some Verbatims & be done with it ! , which I have done on occasion . I have & use a motley assortment of media - in both formats in various brand names ,( Taiyo yuden-silver shiny's , Sony & Fuji MIJ 's, Sony Mij(not Taiyo) ,maxell MIJ & Mit (Ritek) , Verbatims ,Sony Taiwans , Officedepot (Riteks & Ricohjpns ) Tdk (Ricohjpns ) ext... & though I tend to stick with one or two brands at a time ( depending on need & which spindle I've opened already ! I generally put critical recordings on Verbtims and or Taiyo Yudens if I can ! Though I can't say I've had bad luck with the others ! I realse that everyone has different burners and computerz as well as needs so what works in my case may not in yours or others ! So as I see it the reason for hunting up MIj Media at your local retail outlet is atleast two fold ! One is you can get the DVD+R media at a better price point ,most times ! Two. is the the Thrill of The Hunt !!!! I love to hunt LOL! Quick Saugmon get the Traps !!!!! ( LOL!!!!!) It's like a scavenger hunt ! Or to paraphase that Great American
Quote:

" It's like a box Of chocolates , Ya' never know what your gonna get!!!!!" Lol! You get the picture ! Anyway sorry for rambling on ! Time for my Boot heels to be a wandering ! Later Gang Ciao!
