I frequently get an I/O error (when using DVD Decrypter) or cyclic redundancy check (when using DVD Shrink). It happens with various different dvds (latest being United 93). What am I doing wrong? I've read the forums here and have tried:
DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink
Ripit4me
DVD Fab
Also set DVD Decrypter to ignore read errors too and that doesnt do anything either.
None of these seem to work...strange thing is that my roommate's machine seems to be able to rip this movie just fine.
My components are:

cyclic redundancy errors are usually caused by dirty or scratched discs.May hap you need to make sure that they are as clean as possible and dont have scratches.

Well it couldnt decipher the VOB file, so is there some encryption you dont know about or is this VOB file damaged.It is known to happen that movie companies put damaged VOB files within dvd's to stop piracy.
A suggestion would be: make sure the discs are dirt and scratch free!
buy AnyDVD 6.1.00 or higher and use that application to rip your movie to your hard drive as decypter and shrink arent upgraded and your movie is relatively newer than these old programs.You need something current

I used to have a Sony DRU500AX, +/- 4x Single Layer burner. Paid enough for it, it lasted 3 years, but last November it finally stopped functioning. I could still burn CD's and I could even rip the DVD with various programs, but when it started writing a DVD, I would get an error similar to yours, and it was always in the same place.
As the burning head moves along the surface of the DVD media, it has to keep aligned. For some reason at that particular area, it stopped being aligned. I forget the program I used to check this out, it was a sony program that was designed to test DVD burners, you can probably find it on the Sony DVD website- I got the program when looking for formware for the DRU500AX- It was software offered to help diagnose problems.
If it is not an actual defect in the device tracking - Then your ASPI layer is Effed up. Open yer control panel and go add/remove and see if something called ASAPI was added. If it is there, do not delete it, if it is not evident, you may find traces of it in the registry. ASAPI comes with Pinnacle and other DVD Authoring Programs.

Yah, but this is easily defeated by finding the Protected Sectors List through Ripit4me. If this error only happens on one particular DVD, then it is possible we have a Protected Sector. Use Ripit4me to generate a PSL and when the PSL is inserted into DVD Decrypter, it will run over those bad sectors like a steamroller and you'll have a DVD that plays perfectly that can be copied to a video tape if you wish.
It just needs to be clear when exactly the error is happening. For EVERY DeeVeeD that you try to copy? Or just one? Is it s Diznzey moovie? Dizzney Moovies are protected the hell out of. So are Sony moovies like Ultra Violet and Underworld Evolution (For some reason only the movies that have scantily clad chicks as the heroine are protected like that - Havent figured out the formula for that yet. For example, every moovie I have with whats her name The 5th Element, uh: Milla Jovobitch, is protected, and so are moovies with Kate, ah. Eh- Well that chick with the rubbery suit in Underworld, Not blanchette the other one, ah! Beckensale. Protected! And Charlize Theron too).
