Hi.

I just quickly scanned your log and noticed a few things.

You're burning all the way to the outer edge of the disk. You may want to set your target output size to 4400MB in your authoring software to prevent this and avoid potential problems.

Try reducing your burn speed to 8X or even lower and see if that makes a difference. Burning at max speed increases the potential for unsuccessful burns.

The Sony -R 16X software you're trying to burn can be difficult for many burners. I don't think your burner is a HP retail version. It must be an OEM version made for Gateway, Dell, or another manufacturer. That said I don't think you have the latest firmware. My reasoning is that the 840i version is up to firmware version 68JH which would seem newer than the firmware you have, version 66FF. I do not know whether the 840i firmware will update on a 840e model or not, but you might try if you're interested. Link to firmware below:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...1101461&lang=en

Have you tried your computer vendor's support site for an updated firmware for the burner?

There is a newer more stable version of Nero 6 available. To upgrade, uninstall your current version noting your program serial number, run the Nero 6 Clean Tool and then install version 6.6.0.18 from the following two packages:

http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe
Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

This would seem to indicate an error in the video files you're trying to burn. What authoring program did you use to generate the VOB file folder?

The burner is an external burner I bought last spring seperate from the computer. I was having no problems originally, but over the last few months I haven't really used it. I tried using it this past week with the same programs and media that worked previously, not it was a no go. Thanks for the help, I'll see if any of it works.

I used dvd shink. I believe that is the problem. I am going to see if any of my previously shrunk and burned DVDs burn by just straight copying with Nero. If they do, it would make me think that the data getting pulled off the original is bad, and by burning in fine.

Yea, well let us know.

Have you tried burning with ImgBurn. Just dump an ISO from Shrink and burn it with ImgBurn.

There is also a version of Shrink that is already setup autoburn with ImgBurn:

OK, I successfully burned a disc from a previoulsy copied disk. So the Nero and my burner do not seem to be the problem. So the problem seems to lie with the DVD Shrink or the disc being copied.

Yes it seems like something went amiss during the reauthoring.

again Nero has trouble reading data from DVD Shrink. Maybe time to try another program, although i've never had trouble with shrink until this past week.

well it got through the burn, but the disc doesn't play. It opens the first screen and doesn't move past.

There are three general approaches to backing up DVDs that have strong structural copy protection embedded.

AnyDVD + DVD Shrink/DVD Decrypter/ImgBurn (AnyDVD costs $, rest are free)

DVDFab Decrypter + VOBBlanker/FixVTS + Imgburn (all free)
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

Ripit4me (all free)
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/422740

In addition:

- you must use decent quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled disks, especially those from Sony and Fuji.
- you shouldn't burn at max speed. Half or less the rated speed of the media is a good rule of thumb to maximize the likelihood of a good quality burn.
- you need to make sure your burner's firmware is up to date. Firmware can be found at the manufacturer's web support site as well as here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

- you shouldn't multitask during the burning process. Close down all unnecessary programs.
