hello,

does anyone know how those resolutions differ and affect a HDTV? is 1024x768 a widescreen resolution or 4:3? i've seen some tv's in both those resolutions and wonder how the former is widescreen.

4:3=1.333, 1024:768=1.333, 1366:768=1.778, 16:9=1.778. 1024:768 is a 4:3 aspect and not a widescreen aspect ratio, widescreen aspect ratio is at least 16:9 or 1.78, it can be as high as 2.40:1. HDTV will be determined by the actual signal resolution, 720p or 1080i. Some HD programs are broadcast in 4:3 aspect, such as ESPN2HD, and some will be broadcast in 16:9 or higher.

I think you mean 1024x768 vs 1366x768. A screen with an 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect that is 1280 pixels wide will be 720 pixels high.

The resolution doesn't determent aspect. Resolution defines how many pixels there are and Aspect defines how those pixels are arranged.

Example:

1024 / 768 = 1.33

4:3 = 1.33

As ChiknLitl stated 1.33 is equivalent to a 4:3 ratio. So to answer your question; 1024x768 is a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The confusing part is that regardless of aspect ratio a tv with 768 rows of pixels can be called a 768p (p = Progressive Scan) set. The difference is that a 16:9 screen 768p set has a resolution of 1366x768 (1.78:1 ratio) while the 4:3 screen 768p set has a resolution of 1024x768 (1.33:1 ratio).

the reason why i asked that question is i saw some plasma tv with the native resolution mentioned as 1024x768 but its 16:9 widescreen tv. so was wondering if that is true WS or companies are marketing the sets the they wanted. i also saw 1366X768 which I agree is widescreen.

i read in another site is if the vertical pixel is 720 and above it's HD. so given these does the native resolution if they mention as 1024X768 matter.

i will try to post the models i'm talking about.

Yea I know what you mean... I sell a Panasonic 42" plasma that is an HD widescreen that boosts a 1024x768 resolution. I don't know if it is a typo or what.

I read some where that due to how they activate the pixels (in groups or individually) they might not count all of the pixels as separate pixels even though they can be used independently. I don't know if Panasonic uses that technology but I know that Hatachi does in there 1080p 42" plasma.
