I have a 2004 truck with a DVD player in it. The player in my truck will not play any of my backup disk of movies I made. Now these movies do work in all 3 different player that I have. But all of my original will work in the truck's factory DVD player. I've been using DVD-R by Taiyo Yuden(they're not the fake ones). I even tried some Ritek and had the same problems. So today, I read something about bitsetting using DVD+R and it worked(using Nero) in the truck player. Could someone tell me if, all originals are DVD-ROMS. If I will be losing quality by changing my DVD-R's to DVD+R(DVD-rom setting)? Until today I thought that all recorders was compatible to DVD-R. I like using the -R, is there anyway to make the -R work in the older recorder?

If you see it works for you when you use DVD+R media booktyping it into DVD-ROM,then i guess you just need to adopt that type of media. There isn't any difference in quality except the DVD+R can be set to DVD-ROM which then will make it playable in your truck's DVD player.Original DVDs are all DVD-ROMs,so by bitsetting the DVD+R media into DVD-ROM it fools the player by making it see your DVDs as original ones.In fact most people prefer use the DVD+R because of its booktyping capability which increases playability in most players and game consoles.

good advise from TY4Ever. I prefer +R media for that reason..... I tried -Rs..... they work in all my players but I get better scans with the +R media and I only use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim! Very important to use quality media. Soooooooo if your player plays the +Rs better than the -Rs....... change over! booktyping your drive to make all your +R media DVD-ROMs make it more compatible with all players! use it..... and feel confident about the quality because to me it's better than the -Rs! my scans prove it for my burner! And that's all that matters..... what works for you and keep using it! happy burning .... welcome to AfterDawn!

The above is taken from my sig. and yes, DVD-ROM is the best DVD format on this planet. All original DVDs are pressed as DVD-ROM (hence even original PS2/PS3 and XBOX/360 are pressed as DVD-ROM).

Thanks for all the good information and advise everybody. I was just about to order some more -R when I came across someone talking about booktyping. I have a question about booktyping. I read that I should turn the booktype switch to automatic. What does that do? Why wouldn't I just turn the switch to DVD-ROM? Also, I've always heard that memorex was not a keeper DVD, but never heard why. I like using TY printable, but never knew if the silver or white printable has any quality difference? Now I'm finding out that the verbatim at the local Sams store is also a good brand? One more question, what scan program do you use to check your disk/burner. and what is consider a good scan score?

By setting the "booktype" via Nero to "automatic", it will set the booktype automatically to DVD-ROM whenever you used any DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL media.

Yes, Memorex aka memosux or CMC MAG is inferior when comparing to 1st class media; Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Hitachi Maxell (MIJ).

Another good rule of thumb is to always keep your burner's firmware up-to-date, use 1st class DVD+R media and booktype to DVD-ROM and you'll be free of worries.

had to get the, hitachi maxell's in there huh alkohol..lol
just kidding ya.
you cant go wrong with them 3 brandsof disc there.

the quality scan that most all of us use here at AD is the Nero cd/dvd scan. any scan number in the 90's is good. but you cant allways go by the scans. you need to rely on if they play good for you and if you can rerip the disc you burnt.
there also is a program called dvdinfpro which does the same qualit scan just different look to it, not all the same features as Nero has some more and some less..or if you have liteon you can use k-probe..

My motto has always been "If it's not broke don't fix it".
Since this drive isn't supported, I never looked for any firmware upgrades in the past. Next I'll try burning and see if it now make any coasters.
I don't know what these test results means but i do know the quality score has greatly dropped.
