Wow. Until now, the only other times I heard of people dying of water consumption was when they were rolling. (extacy)

Whats really sad is that she didn't even win!!! She was doing it for her kids, whom she left behind without a parent all because of poor judgement on the part of not only the radio company but her as well. Sorry if I sound cold, but we are not camels. Too much of anything in this world will inevitably kill you. When I went to basic training, there was an overweight trainee with me that sweat like a pig everyday. He would down water just about every 5 minutes, but no sodium (electrolites) and that was what led to his death after 3 days of training in the sun and excessive amounts of water with no sodium replacement.

Happiness is not having the things you want, its wanting the things you have.

DEjuliano: I had a science teacher who made fun of my when I said that you can OD on water. It is a fact that any substance, in too large a quantity can be fatal. Some things though, like marijuana and mushrooms, are almost impossible to ingest enough of to be fatal. Yeah, I had to get that in there. haha... Water on the other hand though...

I didn't realize until I saw this story on the news that this is what was happening to me when I was in the Marines, going through DI School at Parris Island.

We exercised 3 hours every morning before school, and it was never anything easy. I consume a lot of water anyway to avoid dehydration, but I really had to while going through this school, as everyone did. The Marines took heat-related injuries very seriously, and if a student was treated twice for this type of exersion, he or she was dropped from the school, which is a bad thing for a career.

One day after several miles of running and several sets of lifting weights, we were doing set after set of crunches followed by pushups, and vise versa. We were at our physical limits, and I started getting really dizzy and was about to faint. I raised my dogtags to signal that I couldn't go on, and was taken to the shade while being yelled at the whole time. The Navy Corpsman (medic) had me drink water, water, and more water. The more I drank, the worse I felt. I told him I wouldn't drink any more, as this had never happened to me in my 10-year career, and I didn't think water would help. He released me to go to sick bay, and after getting some electrolytes and rest, I was all better, but no one ever told me what was wrong with me.

I'm just glad that I didn't die that day, even though I was soon dropped from the school, and my career ended 3 years later from the back injury that began at Parris Island.

...but deadly for 12,000 years is Carbon 14.

Many of the teachers at the school I work at will lick salt during the summer months. I was surprised by it at first, but then I understood why they were doing it. Just comes down to balance. Oh, and come to think of it, sweat is salty and wet. Perhaps replacing the stuff that comes out with an identical input makes perfect sense...

I believe the alcohol in beer dehydrates you at a faster rate than the water hydrates you. :-P

I am sorry if I get the details on this wrong.

Wasn't there a famous painter who died from his bladder bursting? I believe he was drinking absinthe. Back in those days, it was "in" to hold off on using the bathroom, where as today people try to not throw up while drinking.

I only say this as Dej mentioned drinking beer.

Anyways, it never ceases to amaze me how people can be so ignorant about risk factors. People are scared to death of getting eaten by a shark, when they go out onto roads with 50mph speed limits. Unbelievable.

WATER INTOXICATION

well no kidding this is why they tell you not to drink a hole lot of water and you would think the people working at the radio station would have been smart enough to have them pee before they leave the station
