I don't get why a movie clip that is 700 mb takes up 4GB of DVD space?

I assume that when you've copied the clip to a DVD disc, you've checked the burned disc to see how much space is left?

If this is an AVI, AVI is basically a container holding a compressed file and encoding extracts it. Players are available to burn data DVD.

mistycat, Yes AVI files are smaller etc..Are you saying 700MB of AVI files "uncompressed" are equal to a 4.7GB disc? (i'm not into AVI) :P

No, but when you choose to encode that file, you select a bitrate level to encode to or some encoders select it for you and it is bitrate that determines final file size. But, Higher bitrate = better quality but larger file sizes. A bitrate of 3000 would result in an encoded file size smaller than a bitrate of 6000 but of less quality.
