I just purchased a 300gb Seagate Barracuda and have finished the physical installation but when I boot up into XP (SP2), I receive no indication that the drive was successfully installed nor does it show up in My Computer. I've read the manual and it says to go into the bios so that it can autodetect the new drive but I don't see an option for that (ASUS A8V Deluxe).

Granted, this is my first time with a SATA hd but I've successfully installed two other IDEs in this machine. Perhaps I just can't run it with two other IDE hd's in the same machine?

The Afterdawn forum readers have been a boon during my computer building experience so I'd hoped that you guys could help me once more. Thanks.

You probably just need to install the SATA/RAID drivers from Asus.
Or you might need to partition it with something like partition magic to get it to show up.

Hmm do I need drivers if it's natively supported on my mobo? I'm not using any adapter so I didn't think I'd need the use of them. If so, however, I will give that a shot.

It's worth trying, wouldn't you say?
For example, my mobo *Asus M2NPV-VM* also has support for SATA *and SATA II*, but i still needed to install specialised drivers to gett my SATA II drives to work.

Oh, definitely. I did attempt it but now I get a "Invalid System Disk" or some such nonsensical message after rebooting. I downloaded the drivers from Asus, used the Makedisk.exe program to make a boot disk but I get this new error, now.

Is that pretty much how you went about it? I appreciate you taking the time.

Yep, same procedure.
Try downloading Hiren's BootCD *google it, i can't give you a link*, and use one of it's partition managers at boot to see if it's recognised at all, and to format/partition the drive if need be.
Also, have you got S.M.A.R.T. turned on in your BIOS ? if not, that could be causing the problem.

[edit] i just realised you only need to change the order in which your drives boot from your BIOS to solve that newest error, silly me. Then again, i've had a long day, and i'm tired.[/edit]

Ah, well, I appreciate the help. I ended up just returning the darn drive and getting an IDE controller along with a new IDE hd. Thanks much :)
