Help With WinRAR

I can't compress any files with WinRAR. I tried to compress a 300mb music video and it only compressed the video to 289mb. I know there is a better way to do this because I just downloaded a 700mb zip file that had 2 videos in it that equaled 1.2gb in size and I downloaded another rar file that was 184mb and when I extracted the game it was 1.4gb in size. Can someone tell me what settings I need to use? Is there a guide available or a better program to use? I need to compress a lot of files on my external hard drive. I'm using WinRAR 3.70 Beta 2.
