So is there really a difference between $100 HDMI cables and $30 cables? Or is it like a lot of things where you pay for the name? I guess the question should be, is there a noticable difference btw those price points?

No, A digital signal is a Digital signal. The only thing that is worth paying for it the protective noise shielding, and gold plated ends (mostly to prevent corosion)

www.bluejeanscable.com is a good place to order cables. Don't buyMonster way over hyped, your just buying the name.

if you have a bj's near you i bought my belkin HDMI cables for 24.99 and they worked just as good as the monster cables i initially bought. but look around in flyers i have seen RCA HDMI cables ar walmart for 24.99 as well. and there is no difference monster is way way way overhyped, they make great batteries though.

S2K is right. The monoprice cables are the best quality for its price. Their 6-feet 24AWG cable with net jacket and gold plated, heavy duty connectors are a great value at $18.00:

Actually monoprice.com is a sponsor of avsforums and has been awarded Best of 2006 for entry level cables by Secrets of Home Theater and High Fi:

Performance

In all my tests, these cables performed flawlessly. I started with standard signals such as sending 720p and 1080i signals from my HD-PVR to my projector. I also wanted to test the cables more thoroughly, so I connected my PC to a 1080p LCD panel using the 35' HDMI cable, sending a 1920x1080 signal at 60 Hz. Again no issues with the cable.

Conclusions

Monoprice.com delivers everything you could want in a cable: first rate performance at bargain prices. They even sell specialized versions for in-wall installations, or with pretty outside jackets to impress your friends. They also have all the adapters you could need (HDMI->DVI, etc.) and innovative connectors like the extension mentioned above.

I cannot give a higher approval rating
