NERO AND DVD SHRINK

I've read a lot of the forums, and tried everything to no avail. Here's my problem:
I just got a brand new HD, so everything has been updated and is brand new, as of today. I installed Nero 6.6.0.18 as per a thread on here, and DVD Shrink 3.2 . I use DVD FAB to back it up, then I open DVD Shrink. I open the files and it analyzes, then when I click on Back-Up, it instantly freezes. The Encoding bar doesnt pop up, nothing happens. I CTRL-ALT-DEL to look at it, and I get the not responding code. If I deselect "enable burning with Nero" then I can do it just fine, but I want to use auto burning for all my backups. Please let me know what I need to do. I make backups all the time using this method on my laptop, but due to overheating and such, I want my desktop to be able to backup. Thanks again.

Sounds like all of the copy protection may not have been removed while decrypting..what program(s) are you using to rip with and what is the name of the movie?

I've tried it on several different movies. I use DVDFAB Decrypter to pull the files off the DVD and bypass the encryption. Then I use Shrink to compress them and burn with Nero. The versions are as follows:
DVDFAB Decrypter Version 3.0.7.2
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15
Nero 6.6.0.18
Like I said, I use all three of these on my laptop and it works just fine. The desktop is much more of a machine than the laptop, so I don't understand why it would just "freeze" up when I click on the backup button.

Another update, Nero 6.6.0.18 won't run programs from StartSmart. I can open up StartSmart, but when I try to click on something, such as "Burn disc image", it just minimizes StartSmart to the taskbar and doesn't load anything up. I'm starting to think my desktop doesn't like Nero.

I ran the cleaner and uninstalled everything. I restarted, ran the two programs listed above, and restarted again. Then I loaded Shrink, loaded the files previously ripped off the DVD, and when I clicked Backup, DVD Shrink froze again. Still doesn't seem to be working.

In addition, StartSmart is still not loading anything off of it. Nero has NEVER worked on this desktop, is there something that could be blocking it from working, or specific drivers I should look at that might need to be updated??

Maybe we are getting somewhere. The InfoTool freezes before it sees my DVD-RW drive. It finds the CDROM and the DVDROM, but not my Plextor that is connected through USB. It just keeps looking for it, I let it look for about 10 min and nothing. The Drive cleaner says no drivers found and only exit is available for me to click. CCleaner is one of the first programs I install on my computer, been running it for a while and I love it, so yes it runs on startup and everytime I add/remove programs.
Plese let me know what else I can do about the above problems, and thanks for your time already.

what preloaded burning software came with that machine? programs like roxio drag to disc can cause compatibilty issues with the other burning software programs you have.
try using the free trial of CloneDVD 2 + AnyDVD and see if that works

I did a clean install of XP, and then self installed the drivers yesterday and today. There is NO burning software on here other than Nero, I am very certain of that. The HD is brand new, and the clean install was completed this morning.

I'll D/L those and try them and let you know. I'm almost positive now that it is my DVD-RW drive that is causing the problem though. Any ideas on cleaning firmware and setting up an external Plextor 740UF drive?

I'm using USB not firewire and I do have the lastest firmware, it's 1.02 for the Plextor. I can post what info it is from the Infotool with the USB unplugged, but it won't give any info on the DVD-RW drive, correct? Which part of the log do I need to post, there are several tabs that InfoTool gives you to look at. Thanks.

You also said that Nero has never worked. The InfoTool stalled the first time, when it got to the point of looking at your Plextor external drive, right? So you tried it with it unplugged. InfoTool then ran correctly.
So with the drive unplugged, see if Nero runs. See if you can open StartSmart with the drive unplugged.
Plug the drive in. Can you see it in My Computer?
All I'm trying to figure out is if the problem is with:
Nero or
Your USB DVD drive or
Your OS/drivers or
?
So by the process of elimination we'll try and find out.
Post the entire InfoTool. There is a "save" icon at the top of the log. It looks like a floppy. Click that to save it as a .txt file. Once saved, open the .txt file then copy/paste it into a reply. It is rather long but post all of it.
One other thing:
Does your Plextor drive book have a "Blink code" chart in it? I see at The Plextor site that most of the drives have this troubleshooting utility built in. Does yours?

OK, couple more. With the drive unplugged, Nero seems to work fine. I just opened and clicked a couple links, but it seemed to open them in a timely manner.
As for the Plextor, I don't remember anything coming with it. I don't have the box (at least I couldn't find it) or any software that might have came with it, other than my Nero CD (v. 6.6.1.14) which I only use for the key with version 6.6.0.18 (D/L from this links on this site).
Now, for Nero never working, it didn't work on my old HD I had in this desktop (which crashed last week, hence the new setup). The Plextor works GREAT on the laptop, I've never had any problems out of it on there at all.

It seems that Nero works correctly. Plugging in your Plextor is messing it up.
So...

I don't know if these are required or not, not being all that savvy with the inner workings of PCs. I would imagine that you did get all the required drivers installed. Because....
From Microsoft:Quote:

If the computer prompts you for a device driver, check with the manufacturer of the device to determine if a driver is available.
Just something to check. I found this in the Micro$oft USB troubleshooting guide. I think you should go through it:

I went through all the info you sent me fasfrank, it seems my USB is set up and functioning properly. There are no yellow tabs in Device Manager, and the USB is powering correctly (not drawing too many milliamps). I did look through some of the reqs for the Plextor, my PC meets them all except for 2. Now most of the time these requirements are for the software that comes with the drive I know, not the hardware itself. I don't have a hispeed USB, but I don't have one on my laptop either and the drive works great, it's just slow. The other req I don't have is a P4, my desktop is only a P3. The laptop however is a P4, could this be causing the problem? I don't want to say it's the problem just to have one, but I'm assuming there's a possibility that it could be.
