ImbNes Super Mario Bros. 3 Saves

I have ImbNes (v 1.3.3) NES Emulator burned to a cd-r. The game I play most is Super Mario Bros. 3. But I'm having a problem with saving. I've read all the tutorials I could find, but nothing.
Ok...I have a PS1 memory card, a PS2 with DMS4 modchip installed. I play SMB3...exit by pressing "L1+R1+Select+Start". Then i'm asked if I want to save SRAM to memory card, not to save SRAM to memory card, or delete file. I select Save SRAM to memory card....The screen says "Saving SRAM to memory card.....". But when I go to load SMB 3 again, the screen tells me "Loading SRAM". The game starts off on level 1. Like a new game. I've heard that I have to save "in-game" first, then perform the steps above. But how do you save in-game?
