memory card slot flashes always

i have a psp which wont detect the memory card which is brand new.
the memory card slot for psp keeps flashing with or wihtout a memory card flashes.

can anyone help

try formatting the card in SETTINGS/SYSTEMSETTINGS/FORMAT MEMORYSTICK on the psp's main menu, my friend had this problem and he had to buy a new memory card :(
