Ijust bought one of those from Meritline.com that holds 600. It was on sale last month for $43. I find it slightly less convenient, but it is easier on your discs and should extend their life expectancy.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Wow... You find it less convenient than binders???? I use Ant Movie Catalog to catalog my discs corresponding to the numbered sleeves in the case. I wouldn't store them any other way now. PLUS, considering the fact that I have over 1,000 dvd's now, I wouldn't even consider flipping binder pages or searching for a title in bookcases.

He probably meant it's less convenient because it's not as compact as a CD binder. These cases take up a lot more space than the binder.
I do agree thouugh. These are easier on the discs but like I just said, it's a bit cumbersome and I need some space saving things (like the binders) in my room lol.
And the way you catalogue your discs in there is how I catalogue mine in the binders. I have a spreadsheet of all my titles in alphabetical order and they each have their location listed. For example, Book 5, page 77.
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

Just some usefull information for everyone concerning this subject.
First let me say that I have the same type of storage as listed above except it is a bit bigger (1,000 DVDs).
Here is what I think could intersest some of you I have this program called DVD Profiler which will catelog all of your movies for you and also provide pictures and info on the movie for you. All you have to do is put in the movie name and it does the rest for you. You can export into excel if you like and they give you a website to share with your family and friends so they can view your collection. It is truly an awesome program. Yep... The same as Ant Movie Catalog (except AMC doesn't "host" catalog on the internet)... I use DVD Spot for hosting my online catalog. (sucker for freeware... LOL) I have currently filled one 1,000-disc case, and I am about 100 movies into my 600-disc case.

I am looking at DVD Profiler again, now... Hmm... I could kill two birds with one stone here. I am especially liking the ability to add title by inserting disc!!!
Back to the topic at hand. As far as saving space goes, I slide my cases under my desk and use them as footrests... LOL

I forgot to mention that DVD Profiler is also free. You can buy it like I did, but to be honest I don't think there is any differance. I do however feel like I should buy it because it is such a great and easy to use program and I want to support it!

We use binders for all our CD/DVDs included our Drivers, OSs and such. We found one at our local computer store and they just went out of business. It held approx 600 discs total. Now we can only find binders that hold 200. And they are really cheap and don't hold up. Where can we find nice ones that will hold 1000 or so? Thanks!

SysAdPgh- For that many disc I would go with the Dj-type hard cases mentioned earlier in the post for safety & protection of your disc & even then it may be slightly unweildy weight wise so you may be better to go with cases of slightly lower capacity and buy two or more space & finances permitting !

I would love to switch to the hard case cases but being the lone female here I'm out voted by the guys. They like to flip from pages to pages. Our Microsoft book holds approx 600 discs and it's got quite a bit more than that. The zipper is about ready to burst. Our drivers take several books and we have them broken up by different client sites. Each Motherboard vendor ships us disc monthly as do other hardware and software vendors. Since we take them to our client's offices we really need nice looking ones. The favorite is made by CaseIt but we no longer can find them. The cheap ones from CompUSA don't hold up.

OK all here are the facts
The ideal storage environment should be cool, dry, and dark. The temperature should be greater than 4°C (39°F) but less than 20°C (68°F) at 20-50% humidity. For archival discs, store at 18°C (65°F) at 35% humidity. Also store in a Vertical position.
Now with that being said you should be able to pick the best method for storing your DVDs. Most people probably lay there binders flat and that isn't the ideal way to store your DVDs. So if you you store your DVDs in binders then you should probably have those binders standing Vertically (Like a book)
Just some info for you to think about :-)

SysAdPgh- Though I think The Hardcase is still probably Best ! Given your Clients wanting to Browse the disc as it were ? Perhaps you might consider one of the Carousel Gadgets ? I think the hold about 100 disc each which is nowhere near the hardcases but you could get several. The appear to be mainly made from Plastic so I don't know how they would hold up in a Heavy /hard use enviorment? But it could be a option for You? Good luck !!!!SysAdPgh
