I hve been trying to burn a video file to a new DVD-R and Nero completes the transcoding and then it says insert a new disc when there already is one in there. The drive will not recognize a store bought movie dvd either. What is weird is the drive will still recognize a CD-R. It will still play completed CD-R's and burn on music and movies on CD-R. I have posted a copy of the Nero history file of my lastest attempt to transcode and burn on dvd a video file. I use to be able to do this, but it just stopped working last week. I use Nero 6 and I thought that might be the problem, so I downloaded Nero 7 trial version and it still is doing the same thing. Any help would be greatly appriciate.

Hi bmh1
What media are you using? Like Sony 16x +R.
Have any problems with these discs before?

CdRomPeripheral : Memorex 16X DVD-ROM AJiA atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off
Your DVD-Rom is in PIO mode so best to turn that back on. Here's a guide.
May not be playing into this problem if your not using this drive to read but best to have all drives in DMA mode.

Physical memory : 479MB
Free physical memory: 86MB
Memory in use : 81

Lot of memory in use so no multi tasking and close any unneeded programs.
If you haven't done a disc cleanup, defrag and virus/spyware scan very recently I would do that too.

I'm using the same batch of dvd's that I used when it did work. They are Verbatim DVD-R 1X-4X. I also tried it with two HP DVD+R 8X. Neither one worked.

Ok they drive could be on it's way out - same discs that aren't a problem no are and not able to recognize originals either.
The laser intensity is higher for dvd's then cd's so that would be why it's still able to read them.

Here's a couple of options you may want to try.
Try ImgBurn to burn these files. Use the build mode for non image files. Here's a link.

The drive is an oem LiteOn SOHW-1633s - so you could try some patched firmware for this and see if that does the trick.
You would use BSOY - crossflashing - patched.
You can get it here

Tried it again after defraging and turned on the DMA for the secondary IDE. Still no luck. I will try what is in your previous post. The log looked the same as the first, just more physical memory and it now says the DMA is on. Here is a copy of the new log.

Well the next step is to try and isolate the problem a bit more. Try a different burning application to take Nero out of the loop. Try ImgBurn. It's free and an excellent program to have.
http://www.imgburn.com/

Try some DVD RW media as well. You can erase it and use it again. It's handy for testing. Who knows? It may be recognized. The Verbs shouldn't be a problem though. Verbatim is some of the best available so that ought to be recognized.
Your Memorex burner may need repaired or replaced at some point. At around $35-$45 for a new burner, it's not a bad idea. Not yet though.

I downloaded Imgburn and created on image file. When I started to write the image to dvd, I entered a new verbatim DVD and the blue light on the burner came and then imgburn said device not ready (Medium not present). So I then tried with the hp DVD and same thing. Thanks for all of your replys so far.

Hmm ok - you can try uninstalling the drive in device manager - rebooting and let Windows do it thing and reinstall.
May not help but give it a shot.

Right click in my computer>properties>hardware>device manager. Right click on this drive listed under DVD/CD-Rom drives. Uninstall.

Can try the patched firmware for the LiteOn (see above)

Do you have another pc that you can try this drive in? May want to hook it up in another pc and if it still fails then chances are it's the drive.

I unstalled the drive and reinstalled on startup. Also tried the LiteOn. No luck. Still says insert a new disc.

Try it in another pc if you can.

Might also want to try cleaning the lens with a dvd lens cleaner or a bit of canned air.

But I think your best bet may just be to pick up a new drive. This one looks like the laser is going.
