x264 files with TMPG?

Hi, I've been using TMPGEnc to encode DVD MPEG-2 files for years now from DivX and XviD AVI source, but I've started to notice AVI files that have been encoded with x264?

I'm not sure what x264 or h.264 is. Is it a new codec or a new type of AVI altogether?

How do I encode these new files to MPEG-2?
