I have had this drive for less than a year and probably burned over 200 DVDs with no problems. Three days ago, I started burning some DVDs using DVDdecrypter. The burn process goes normally, with no errors and a "100% successfully completed" message when finished. The problem is the discs are blank afterwards? I then tried making a data disc using Sonic and the result was the same. Everything appears to burn just fine, but the disc is blank? I have tried two types of Taiyo Yuden media (GH000142 and GG000211) and have no reason to suspect that they are the problem. I can still burn CDs??

I have uninstalled the secondary IDE controller and rebooted.
I installed the latest firmware. Still no luck.

Any suggestions before I buy a new drive?

Thanks!

Can you look at the bottom of the backup discs and see if they actually got burned? Look for the discoloration.

Test them on other drives: game consoles, stand alone players, and pc drives.

Go through device manager under cdrom/dvd drives.Locate your burner in the tree. Double click, click drivers tab, uninstall drivers,ok and reboot.

What's the current firmware version for your NEC?
Maybe a firmware update is in order?

I have seen software do this, including Nero in simulation mode, damaged software, and badly-hacked versions of CD2. Try using something else e.g. IMGBurn and Nero.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I returned the drive to Newegg for a replacement and bought a Samsung SH-S182M in the meantime. Now I'm not so sure it was the drive? I burned a disc on the Samsung using DVDdecrypter and the same thing happened. Using the Nero software supplied with the Samsung, I burned the same file successfully. I will try an uninstall and reload DVD Decrypter and see what happens.
