The choice is yours really....do a little experimenting to see which one you prefer. Every answer you get will be different because you have some who prefer -R and some who prefer +R. +R have a few benefits over -R as you are able to booktype (with some burners) to make your backup more compatable among stand alone players.

djdyna:

What's the brand name, model#,and current firmware version for your DVD-RW drive? That'll help decide which format to use.

Some drive booktype the plus format to dvd-rom: Benq,Plextor, some sony,Lite-on,LG,Ricoh,some Nec. Therefore the plus format is the most superior.

Other drives without booktyping capability: HP,Some NEC,Pioneer, some sony, and most other brands not listed: Probably will favor the dash format. It's inferior to the booktyped plus format to dvd-rom,but superior to basic non booktyped plus format media.

Plus and Dash all comes down to compatability on the stand alone players,pc drives, and game consoles that will play your backups. Some may prefer dash, some the plus, they may play both, they may not even play either. If you got a booktyping capable drive, those booktyped backups will have the highest comatability.

Best to get a batch of both plus and dash, burn a couple and test them out in all those drives that you plan on those backups to be played on. If you get any of these error messages, then switch to opposite format:
No Disc
Dirty disc
Wrong region
Wrong format
Illegal disc

Make sure it's quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.Crap media will do a number on you as well. Avoid HP,Phillips,TDK,and store brand named media like staple's.

TDK outsources their media. This means 2-4 different manufacturers can make the same -8x or +8x,etc.

Got the MID code for those TDK's?

Being inkjet printable, there may be only 1 manufacturer, maybe 2. Maxell white full hub inkjet printable are made by hitachi and prodisc. There may even be some cmags thrown in. Huge quality difference.

Most brand named media does the same.Memorex,Philips,HP,Fuji,Sony,etc.

Why TDK? I read a lot of Nero logs here at AD and the MID codes with TDK media come up a lot. It's suppose to be 1st class media for TTG and TTH,but lots of people have problems with them. There's very few sales on them as well. I can get verbatim or sony media for 25-28 cents each when on sale.

BTW: I/O Magic outsources their drives as well. That means your drive could be a benq,BTC,or lite-on. A 50/50 shot that it's either a benq or Lite-on.This is what we call a rebadged drive.

HP drives do the same thing. Look at my HP640c lightscribe. It's made by HP,but they had 3-4 other models and 1 of them was the rebadged benq-1655. The inferior backups, low compatability rate, and coasters out of the wazu is why I don't back movies up with it. It does read very well and scribes ok. Very few firmware updates also make this drive inferior.

You most like don't have bitsetting capability to booktype,so the dash format should perform the best, unless that I/O drive is a rebadged benq. Look at the current firmware version and tell us what it is.

Here's a free and handy program that'll tell you the MID codes, correct burner model#,and the current firmware version:
